MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak: Patients evacuated to Europe as Tenerife port is confirmed

MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak prompts evacuations as patients are flown to Europe; Spain prepares Tenerife port while international contact tracing continues.

The MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak has prompted the evacuation of infected people from the Dutch-operated expedition ship, with several patients flown to hospitals in Europe for treatment. Oceanwide Expeditions and national health authorities confirmed that two patients landed in the Netherlands and another was evacuated on a separate flight. The World Health Organization has linked multiple illnesses and three deaths aboard the vessel to hantavirus infection, heightening international coordination.

Evacuations Begin; Two Patients Treated in the Netherlands

Two patients from the MV Hondius have been transported to Dutch hospitals, Oceanwide Expeditions said, and are receiving medical care under national protocols. Dutch foreign ministry officials described two of the evacuees as having had “acute” symptoms at the time of removal from the ship. A third evacuee was placed on a delayed flight and reported to be in stable condition while further transfers are arranged.

Andes Strain Confirmed and Transmission Risk Assessed

Laboratories have identified the Andes strain of hantavirus in confirmed cases, authorities including the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa reported. Unlike most hantaviruses, the Andes variant can be transmitted between people, though experts emphasize that it requires repeated, close contact and does not spread easily. The World Health Organization has said the overall public health risk remains low but urged vigilance and continued testing.

Profiles of Evacuated Individuals and Fatalities

Among the evacuees are the ship’s doctor, a 56-year-old British national, and a 41-year-old Dutch crew member, according to Spanish officials and the cruise operator. A 65-year-old German passenger who had close contact with a deceased traveler was also evacuated for treatment. The outbreak has so far resulted in three deaths: a 70-year-old Dutch man who died aboard on April 11, his 69-year-old wife who died in Johannesburg on April 26 while attempting to return home, and a German passenger who died on May 2.

Route, Onboard Precautions and Passenger Conditions

The MV Hondius departed Argentina in early April with about 150 passengers and crew, on an itinerary that included stops in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and various South Atlantic islands. After cases emerged the ship diverted to Cape Verde but passengers were not allowed to disembark, and the vessel has since been directed to sail to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Passengers remaining aboard have been told to practice social distancing, wear masks in common areas and follow enhanced sanitation measures, with staggered seating at meal times and hand sanitizer stations throughout the ship.

Spanish Government Orders Docking at Tenerife Despite Local Objections

Spain’s health minister announced the government would allow the Hondius to dock at a port in Tenerife so that passengers requiring medical attention can be transferred to shore facilities. The decision drew criticism from the regional president of the Canary Islands, who questioned the necessity of sending the vessel on a multi-day voyage to the islands. Spain’s central authorities, which oversee port control and responses to potential imported infections, said they would manage disembarkation and medical clearances, while urging calm and strict health safeguards.

International Coordination on Repatriation and Contact Tracing

European nations and international agencies have mobilized to coordinate evacuations, medical care and testing for passengers of different nationalities. Spain has indicated that Spanish nationals will be transferred to a hospital in Madrid, while other EU countries have been invited to arrange repatriation for their citizens; the European Commission will step in if a nation does not coordinate evacuations. The UK Health Security Agency reported two British nationals who had already returned independently are self-isolating and being monitored despite showing no symptoms.

Tracing Exposures and Investigating the Source

Health authorities in South Africa and Argentina are conducting contact tracing and epidemiological investigations to determine the origin of the infections linked to the MV Hondius. South African officials identified dozens of contacts, including airport and medical staff, and said many people reached through tracing are under observation. Argentine investigators are pursuing leads related to a Dutch couple who visited areas in southern Argentina, including a bird-watching outing in Ushuaia, and plan environmental sampling for rodents in locations the couple visited.

Passengers and crew have described life aboard since the outbreak as subdued but orderly, with many remaining in cabins or watching films while awaiting official decisions. Oceanwide Expeditions has said additional medical professionals have boarded the vessel to support health monitoring and that evacuations from the ship are scheduled to begin in the days after docking. Health authorities across affected countries continue to emphasize testing, tracing and targeted isolation of symptomatic individuals.

Global health agencies and national ministries involved in the response stress that while the Andes hantavirus can transmit between people in specific circumstances, transmission typically requires sustained close contact that public health measures can limit. Investigations into the chain of transmission and environmental sources will proceed alongside clinical treatment for those evacuated and close monitoring of contacts to prevent further spread.
