A specialized medical team at Sheikh Khalifa Specialist Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah performed a complex surgery for the first time to remove a cancerous tumor from a patient’s liver, using laparoscopy, in the first complex operation conducted by the hospital to remove a cancerous tumor from the liver.

The head of the intensive care department and consultant surgeon at the hospital, Dr. Yong Chung An, told Emirates Al-Youm that the hospital received a 48-year-old foreign national patient, suffering from a three-centimetre-long cancerous tumor in the back of the liver.

He added that the patient had been diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and the tumor was completely removed, and the patient recovered from it, but the cancer cells returned to spread and extended to the liver, pointing out that the tumor was discovered through routine examinations that the patient underwent after the breast cancer operation, to be Then the malignant cancerous mass is detected, through careful examinations in the liver area.

Chung An explained that he hoped to study the patient’s health condition to save her life and preserve the health of her liver, so the medical team decided to remove the tumor through a small opening in the rib area and insert a tube to remove the tumor.

He added that for the first time, the laparoscope was used in operations to remove cancerous tumors in the liver, due to the accuracy of using the laparoscope in removing small-sized tumors, adding that the operation lasted four hours, without the patient experiencing any symptoms during the operation.

Chong An pointed out that the operation was complicated, because the tumor was in the back of the liver. The operation is considered one of the innovative operations that contribute to increasing the rapid recovery rates for patients, as the patient was discharged from the hospital four days after the operation was performed.

He stated that during the past years, cancerous tumors in the liver were removed by making a wide incision in the abdomen to remove the tumor, and with the developments in medical technology, the laparotomy was dispensed with, as it is a large and arduous operation, and operations to remove tumors in the liver from the rib area were adopted, as it helps to Treat and recover patients faster, and reduce their chances of contracting microbial infections.
