The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Engineer Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, revealed that the Ministry is currently working on establishing 20 new water facilities and expanding 3 existing dams in 12 different regions of the country at a cost of 421 million dirhams.
In a written response to a question submitted by member Naima Abdullah Al-Sharhan about “raising the carrying capacity of dams,” he confirmed that dams in the country are designed according to the best international engineering practices in proportion to rainfall rates, as these dams contribute to protecting lives and property and enhancing the country’s water reserves and in In light of the global climate changes with the increase in rainfall rates, the Ministry took proactive measures to keep pace with these changes, which included appointing 3 specialized consultants to study all the basins of the northern and eastern coast of the country, and conducting hydrological studies for all areas within Basins to assess the current situation, provide innovative solutions to reduce damage resulting from rain and water runoff, and preserve water wealth, which comes within the strategic objectives of the state.
Through these studies, reliance is placed on the latest international standards and modern design programs for sustainable water facilities, including dams, water barriers and water channels, in a way that ensures the protection of areas affected by exceptional rainfall depressions.
Work is currently underway to implement the first package of water facility projects on the eastern and northern coast of the priority country, based on the outcomes of studies funded through the initiatives of His Highness the President of the State, may God protect him. This package includes the establishment of 20 new water facilities, and the expansion of 3 existing dams. In 12 different regions of the country, at a cost of 421 million dirhams.
