Residents in Sharjah reported that they were subjected to physical assaults, robberies with knives, and car burnings in the past few days by a gang of masked men, which Sharjah Police described as “a group of about 10 people, whose members were arrested and are under investigation.”
People who were directly attacked and eyewitnesses told Al-Emarat Al-Youm stories of severe beatings, luring operations, and stabbing with swords and sharp tools. However, a Sharjah Police official downplayed the danger of the gang, saying: “The matter does not go beyond quarrels between groups of young people, related to settling scores among themselves.”
He stressed that “these fights are not a widespread phenomenon in the emirate.” According to his statements, Ali Mohammed, 31 years old, who lives in the Umm Khanour area, was severely beaten by the masked gang, who used swords and knives, and directed a torrent of blows to various parts of his body.
“The attackers were a group of masked young men who ambushed him about two weeks ago. They lured him from his home at 2 a.m. to a remote area through one of his friends, and beat him up,” he added, confirming that “their number was about 10 people, and they were all masked and carrying swords and sharp tools. They beat him up and stabbed him several times, causing him to lose consciousness. The most severe blow was a sword blow to the left side of his head, which split part of it and caused a longitudinal cut in his skull.”
Ali continued: “I was unable to defend myself because they surprised me with their painful blows from every direction, and they did not leave me until they thought I had passed away. After I woke up from my fainting spell, I crawled until I reached the door of the house, and I did not realize myself until I was lying in the hospital, where the doctors performed two urgent operations on my head.”
Ali’s father filed a report with the Beheira Police Station, which immediately began conducting initial investigations.
The same group attacked Fahad, 17, in the Al-Qurain area of Sharjah, after they blocked his way as he was leaving his house, according to his aunt Amal, who confirmed that “the group consists of young men in their twenties who are accustomed to loitering, causing chaos and problems, and engaging in immoral practices in the area, and attacking people for no reason.”
She explained that “her nephew Fahd was attacked while he was in front of the house, when three Nissan Patrol cars suddenly blocked his way, and 10 people came out of them carrying swords and knives. Fahd had no choice but to flee, but the young men caught up with him and beat him severely using swords, which caused a broken pelvis, a fractured back, a dislocated shoulder, and cuts to the veins in his leg.”
“Fahd was immediately taken to the hospital, a report was filed against the attackers, and one of them was arrested,” she continued. Fatima, a citizen living in the Al Azra area, confirmed that “the owner of a grocery store next to her house was attacked by masked men carrying swords and a knife. She quoted an eyewitness as saying that he saw a group of three masked men quickly leave the grocery store and drive off in their Mazda vehicle. The grocery store owner followed them, covered in blood, dragging his leg after the masked men attacked him and stole 1,000 dirhams, phone cards, and his mobile phone.”
The same group had set fire to a car owned by a citizen in the Al Qadisiyah area a few days ago, for unknown reasons, according to an official at the Al Hira Police Station in Sharjah.
