Dubai Police arrested a maid of Asian nationality, who used to put amounts of “urine” in the food and drink that she prepared for members of a female citizen’s family who worked for her in the Al Rashidiya area, believing that in this way she could control her employers, according to the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police. Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Al-Marri, who stated that “the incident began when a report was received last week from the head of a female citizen’s family, in which he reported that he and a number of his family members smelled a strange odor in the food, especially salads and tea. They asked the maid about the source of the smell, but she categorically denied knowing about it.”

The head of the family added: “We did not feel comfortable, and that smell worried us, because it is repulsive and does not resemble the smells of any known spices or food ingredients.” He pointed out that “their fears multiplied after they saw the remains of strange liquids that they confirmed smelled like urine in parts of the house, such as the bathtub and the bathroom floor after the maid left it, which made the family’s suspicions about her more likely, especially in light of their knowledge that some of the maids were of different nationalities.” African and Asian women resort to strange customs to court the families they work for.”

Al-Marri pointed out that “a team from the Criminal Investigation Department immediately went to investigate the incident and compared the maid’s behavior to previous cases,” noting that “the work team searched the maid’s room carefully and found a bottle containing a yellowish liquid that she hid among her belongings.”

He continued, “When the maid was confronted with this liquid, she admitted that it contained quantities of her urine, so she was transferred to the Rashidiya police station to keep her away from the family, where she was subjected to interrogation about the reasons for keeping this bottle in her room.”

He pointed out that “the maid was confronted with her employers’ doubts about her behaviour, so she confessed that throughout her work for them over the past four months, she had been putting drops of her urine in food, soup and tea. She also used to do the same behavior while working for a family in one of the Gulf countries.”

Al-Marri explained that “the maid justified her behavior with a widespread belief in her country about the possibility of controlling anyone, by putting urine in his food or drink, and that she resorted to this for the purpose of controlling the family she works for, and pushing them to increase her salary, or give her periodic incentives.”

The accused woman stated that “family members were suspicious of the smell of the food she prepared for them, but they were constantly eating it, until they reported her to the police,” noting that “she has been carrying out this behavior since working in this job.”

Al-Marri stated that “the woman was referred to the Public Prosecution to complete investigations with her,” noting the importance of families paying attention to these matters and employing a reliable maid.

He pointed out that “similar cases have been recorded of maids putting in urine or unclean blood as a form of revenge or quackery.”

Dubai Police recorded a remarkable increase in domestic servant crimes during the year 2011, by up to 17.1%, with 1,010 reports compared to 862 crimes during the year 2010.
