A program to prepare women to accept a second wife

A researcher specializing in psychology has designed a psychological and emotional treatment program to rehabilitate women who suffer from shock as a result of their husbands marrying other women. The program targets wives in cases of hysterical anger and emotional depression, which may affect them psychologically and health-wise, as well as their children.

Feelings of weakness and depression

Psychological and family consultant, Zahraa Al-Moussawi, stated that the presence of a strong competitor causes a person to feel weak, depressed, and feel that he is not wanted, which in turn causes feelings of depression, anger, and frustration.

She explained that these feelings are generated in the wife when her husband marries another woman, and they are negatively reflected on the children and affect their normal lives. There are those who have fallen into these circumstances and were unable to adapt to them, so the negative effects were reflected on the children.

The phenomenon of second marriage

A research study prepared by the psychological and family consultant, Zahraa Al-Moussawi, concluded that the phenomenon of second marriage is permissible in Sharia and law, and it must be dealt with in a way that reduces the negative effects on all parties concerned with the issue, through a rational emotional guidance program, designed to rehabilitate the first wife, after her husband’s marriage, to return to practicing a normal life without psychological crises, noting that the program consists of five guidance sessions.

The study, prepared by the psychological and family consultant, Zahraa Al-Moussawi, and obtained by “Emarat Al-Youm”, is based on five psychological and counselling sessions, during which the wife is convinced that the subject of a second marriage exists, whether we like it or not, and that it is in reality completely similar to the subject of having a second or third child. What the first wife feels of jealousy is completely similar to the feeling of a child who has a brother or sister.

In detail, a research study presented during the activities of the first Abu Dhabi International Conference of the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, which was organized by the Behavioral Sciences Pavilion in Sheikh Khalifa City, affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), stated that the issue of a husband’s second marriage, since it is legally and religiously permissible, no matter how hard the first wife tries to prevent it, it will not happen, and it often causes her shock and an inability to practice daily life as before, noting that some wives suffer from cases of reactive depression as a result of their husbands marrying other women, which negatively affects the children and their ability to make the right decisions.

Al-Moussawi said in her study that the issue of second marriage exists whether we like it or not, and in reality it is completely similar to the issue of having a second or third child. What the first wife feels of jealousy is completely similar to the feelings of a child who has a brother or sister, except that the first is rejected by custom, while the second is a natural matter and the child is blamed for his jealousy, while the first wife is sympathized with for her feelings.

The study indicated that during the first session, a professional relationship is formed between the counselor and the case, by taking basic information, then listening to the case in explaining her problem and inquiring about the most important internal thoughts that disturb her, such as “Is there a defect in her that made her husband marry another woman? Is she undesirable to her husband? Can she face people’s looks now that her husband has another wife? Does her husband’s marriage deprive her and her children of their financial rights in the home and the bank?”

In the second session, according to the study, the counselor teaches the “ABC” model for the case, puts the ideas extracted from the first session in the table, discusses them with the case, and explains the irrationality in them, including the most important idea that comes to the wife, which is “there is a defect in her that made her husband marry another woman.” This idea shakes the wife’s self-confidence and self-esteem, especially since she links her self-esteem to the husband’s esteem for her. Through the dialectical dialogue technique, the wife is convinced that the husband’s marriage does not necessarily mean that she is bad, and is not desirable or wanted.

The third session deals with dealing with one of the most difficult issues that the first wife faces after her husband’s marriage, which is confronting people’s talk about her, or their pity for her, or their encouragement of her to engage in aggressive and destructive behavior with her husband, or against the second wife, or blaming her for being the reason for the husband’s marriage.

In this session, the counselor uses the technique of unconditional self-acceptance, so that she stops blaming herself for the issue, and then role-plays to learn affirmative behavior in the face of those who encourage her to behave aggressively with the husband, or leave the house, or resort to magic and exorcism, so that the husband hates the second wife and returns to her. The case is also taught the difference between patience as a negative state, and adaptation as an effective action.

In the fourth session, the counselor focuses on encouraging the patient to look for a supportive person in her family or friends, whom she can turn to when she feels stressed or tense, or needs emotional support.

The last session is about reassuring the patient that she is on the right track, and stressing the need not to pay attention to those who blame her for adapting to the situation in a way that might make her doubt the correctness of what she is doing.

The research study indicated that the five sessions will achieve unparalleled positive results, explaining that after the counselling sessions, the wife will be able to feel in control of her life, after she used to feel out of control.
