The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) convened its first board meeting of 2026 at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi, where members reviewed the fund’s operational results and approved strategic initiatives tied to its 55th anniversary. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Chairman of the ADFD Board, chaired the session and highlighted the fund’s evolving role in international development finance. The meeting set out decisions and directives designed to expand ADFD’s development footprint and strengthen support for the UAE’s economic priorities.

Sheikh Mansour chairs first 2026 board meeting at Qasr Al Watan

Sheikh Mansour presided over the board’s opening meeting for 2026, which examined recent operations, investment projects and measures to support the national economy. Board members discussed a range of strategic topics and issued guidance to operational teams. The chair’s remarks framed the session within the fund’s five-decade legacy and its forward-looking agenda.

ADFD celebrates 55 years and reaffirms development diplomacy

The meeting coincided with the 55th anniversary of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, established in 1971, prompting reflections on the institution’s long-standing developmental role. Sheikh Mansour paid tribute to the founding vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and credited sustained leadership for ADFD’s global standing. He underscored the fund’s mission to promote sustainable development and to serve as a reliable partner for countries pursuing economic resilience.

Strategy 2030 aims to magnify development impact

Board members reviewed the newly presented Strategy 2030, which sets priorities to enhance the fund’s developmental outcomes and financial innovation. The strategy emphasizes expanding strategic partnerships, designing new financing instruments and aligning ADFD activities with global sustainable development goals. Management described the plan as a roadmap to amplify impact while responding to changing global economic dynamics.

$2bn Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform with $1bn ADFD pledge

One of the major initiatives presented was the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, a multi-year programme targeting overall financing of $2 billion to bolster global water security. ADFD intends to commit $1 billion to the platform, which will combine local and international financing and introduce innovative funding solutions between 2026 and 2030. The initiative is projected to benefit around 10 million people worldwide through improved water infrastructure and resilience measures.

First-ever dedicated satellite to strengthen project oversight

In a first for a development finance institution, ADFD announced plans for a dedicated satellite capacity to enhance monitoring of project implementation and outcomes. The satellite, to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2026 in partnership with OrbitWorks, will integrate with the Al-Tair constellation assembled in Abu Dhabi. Officials said the space-based capability will improve oversight, shorten project cycles and deliver higher transparency for on-the-ground investments.

Support for national exports and adaptive financing solutions

ADFD leadership reaffirmed the fund’s role in supporting Emirati industries and export competitiveness by expanding access to global markets. Director General Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi highlighted the fund’s focus on scalable financing solutions that bolster partner-country priorities and strengthen resilient economies. The board discussed measures to adopt novel financial tools and to deepen strategic alliances that amplify developmental returns.

Commemorative stamp celebrates institutional legacy and public engagement

As part of the anniversary events, a commemorative postage stamp documenting ADFD’s five-decade record was unveiled in collaboration with Emirates Post. Sheikh Mansour signed the winning design, recognizing contributors to the stamp competition and the creative effort to record the fund’s history. The stamp is intended to raise public awareness about the fund’s global projects and to symbolise its diplomatic and developmental achievements.

The board signalled that the achievements of the past 55 years are a foundation for an expanded, innovation-led phase of activity that will see the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development combine traditional financing with new tools and technologies. The decisions taken at the meeting reinforce the fund’s dual mandate to support global sustainable development while strengthening the UAE’s economic and strategic partnerships.

The meeting concluded with instructions to operational teams to accelerate implementation of Strategy 2030, pursue the water platform financing round, finalise satellite arrangements with OrbitWorks and continue efforts to channel development finance toward projects that deliver measurable, long-term benefits.
