Al-Baraka field launches well rehabilitation program to boost oil and gas output

Egypt launches well rehabilitation programme at Al-Baraka field in Kom Ombo

Egypt starts rehabilitation of Al-Baraka field in Kom Ombo, Aswan, with well workovers and new drilling alongside Canadian Meditera to boost local oil and gas.

Egypt launches Al-Baraka well rehabilitation programme

Egypt has begun a comprehensive programme to revive producing wells at the Al-Baraka field in the Kom Ombo area of Aswan.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said the initiative combines maintenance of existing production wells with the drilling of new developmental and exploratory wells.

The move is part of a wider strategy to raise domestic oil and gas output and maximise southern Egypt’s hydrocarbon potential.
Officials described the programme as an early phase of investment aimed at accelerating production and securing local market needs.

Ministry statement and leadership inspection

In a ministry press statement on Monday, the programme’s launch was confirmed as a priority under the petroleum ministry’s production-focused agenda.
Dr. Samir Raslan, chairman of the South Valley Egyptian Holding Company for Petroleum, led a field inspection with Mahmoud Tolba, head of Kom Ombo Petroleum, to oversee preparations.

The delegation reported that a drilling and maintenance rig has arrived on site and teams completed checks on equipment readiness.
Officials said they reviewed the execution timeline and assured stakeholders that operations will proceed according to the established schedule.

Partnership with Canadian investor Meditera

The rehabilitation campaign is being carried out in partnership with Meditera, the Canadian investor in the Kom Ombo concession.
Company sources indicate the collaboration will inject fresh capital and technical support into both well workovers and new drilling programmes.

Meditera’s role includes providing drilling expertise and coordinating with Egyptian operators on operational planning.
The partnership reflects an investment model that links international technical partners with state-backed holding companies to unlock regional reserves.

Operational work: maintenance and new drilling

The initial phase targets comprehensive workovers on a number of producing wells to restore and stabilise output levels.
In parallel, the project will drill two new wells in the first stage, with the option to increase the drilling programme depending on field results and technical studies.

Maintenance activities will focus on well integrity, flow optimization and equipment replacement where necessary.
Drilling teams will deploy both developmental and exploratory techniques to appraise additional prospects within the Al-Baraka concession.

Production targets and strategic objectives

Officials emphasised the programme aligns with the ministry’s primary objective to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
Dr. Raslan highlighted the importance of expediting drilling and development plans to maximise the yield from southern Egyptian basins.

The initial two-well phase is designed to deliver early production gains while technical data from those wells will inform follow-on investment.
Ministry statements linked the Al-Baraka campaign to broader national targets for energy security and optimal resource utilisation.

Local economic and supply implications

Rehabilitating and expanding output at the Al-Baraka field is expected to support local supply chains and sustain regional employment.
Contracting, logistics and service companies in Aswan and surrounding areas are likely to see increased activity as operations progress.

Higher local production could ease pressure on national supply and contribute to stabilising market needs in the short to medium term.
Authorities said they will monitor results closely and consider scaling up drilling and development if technical and commercial indicators justify further investment.

The Al-Baraka field initiative marks a coordinated effort between Egyptian state companies and a foreign investor to revitalise regional hydrocarbon production, with an initial focus on well rehabilitation and targeted drilling to generate timely output increases.
