DEWA launches 46 EV chargers at Al Shira'a HQ under Green Charger

DEWA opens 46 electric vehicle charging points at Al Shiraa headquarters

DEWA opens 46 electric vehicle charging points at Al Shiraa HQ under ‘Green Charger’, serving staff and visitors and supporting Dubai’s green mobility targets.

DEWA activates 46 electric vehicle charging points at Al Shiraa

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has commissioned 46 electric vehicle charging points at its new Al Shiraa headquarters as part of the authority’s “Green Charger” initiative. The deployment expands electric vehicle charging capacity on-site and is intended to encourage staff and official visitors to choose low-emission transport. The rollout reinforces DEWA’s broader push to embed sustainable mobility into government operations.

Charging mix tailored for employees and official guests

The charging array comprises 40 alternating-current (AC) chargers designated for DEWA employees and six direct-current (DC) fast chargers reserved for official visitors. The configuration balances everyday workplace charging needs with the faster turnaround times required by visiting delegations and official vehicles. By providing both AC and DC options, DEWA aims to reduce range anxiety among staff while demonstrating readiness to support higher-demand, short-stay usage.

Al Shiraa positioned as a global benchmark for sustainable buildings

Al Shiraa is presented by DEWA as the world’s tallest, largest and smartest government building operating as a positive-energy facility. The building’s design and systems generate more clean energy than they consume, creating a testbed for integrating renewables, storage and intelligent energy management. Adding electric vehicle charging infrastructure onsite complements the building’s clean-energy profile by aligning transport energy needs with locally generated renewable power.

Leadership frames the move within national climate objectives

DEWA’s CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, linked the installation to Dubai’s and the UAE’s climate ambitions, noting the move supports the UAE Net Zero by 2050 goal and Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy 2030. He said the Al Shiraa project exemplifies translating strategic sustainability targets into everyday practices across government operations. The authority described the chargers as part of a broader effort to lower transport-sector carbon emissions, improve air quality and enhance residents’ quality of life.

Growth of Dubai’s charging network reaches 2,223 points

DEWA reports that, by the end of the first quarter of the year, Dubai’s total public and private charging stock reached 2,223 points. That figure includes DEWA’s Green Charger stations and assets operated by licensed independent charging operators. The expansion reflects partnerships across public and private sectors and growing investment in EV infrastructure to meet increasing uptake of electric vehicles in the emirate.

Regulatory framework aims to standardise and scale charging services

DEWA has established a regulatory framework to govern EV charging infrastructure, setting licensing requirements for independent charging operators and technical standards for deployment. The rules seek to ensure interoperability, reliability and safety while accommodating future demand and technological advances. Officials say this regulatory clarity has attracted private-sector partners and helped structure rapid, coordinated growth of the charging ecosystem across Dubai.

Operational and environmental implications for the emirate

Deploying chargers at a high-profile government site is intended to catalyse broader behavioural change among employees and visitors, reinforcing the message that electric vehicle charging is an accessible part of daily life. Integrating charging infrastructure with a positive-energy building also provides operational benefits by allowing local renewable generation to serve vehicle loads, smoothing demand on the wider grid. DEWA expects such integrated approaches to be replicated across other government and commercial projects as part of long-term decarbonisation plans.

The installation at Al Shiraa is one element of DEWA’s ongoing programme to support the transition to electric mobility in Dubai, combining infrastructure, regulation and demonstration projects to accelerate adoption. As more residents and fleets electrify, DEWA and its partners will continue to expand charging availability and refine policies to keep pace with technological and market developments.
