The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Diwa) announced the start of the use of the cubic meter unit instead of the “imperialist gallon” to measure the volume of water consumption, starting from the billing cycle for the month of March 2025.
In a statement, the commission stated that this comes in implementation of Cabinet Resolution No. 85 of 2023, and in compliance with Ministerial Resolution No. 43 of 2024 issued by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, regarding the cancellation of the work of the “Gallon” unit in the water meters in the country.
“We are always keen to comply with the local and international regulatory requirements, to ensure that our services are paid to the highest standards of quality, competency, reliability and availability.”

It is noteworthy that the current smart meters that were installed by dealers are already compatible with the measuring system in the cubic meter, and there will be no need to change the customers’ meters, and the authority stated that in the context of its keenness to adopt the change easily and smoothly, it will begin to include both units (cubic meters and mule) in The water bills and the customer’s data board, in preparation for the new unit’s approval, starting from the billing course for the month of March 2025, and dealers will be notified of the new change through official communication channels.
