Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to implement a group of innovative and ambitious projects in the Hatta region with the aim of enhancing sustainability, in implementation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, for Hatta to be a model. The Authority stated, in a statement, that among the projects it is implementing in Hatta is the “Sustainable Hatta Waterfalls” project, which was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, in December 2024. The authority implemented it at a cost of about 60 million dirhams, as part of its social responsibility to make this project a distinctive tourist destination.

Sustainable Hatta Waterfalls
The project included using the slope of the Hatta Dam as a waterfall descending from the upper dam of the Hatta Hydroelectric Station to form a water channel with retail stores, restaurants and cafes on its banks. The slope of the Hatta Dam was used to create the largest rock mosaic painting in the world, according to Guinness World Records. Implementation of the mural, which carries a historical picture of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, may God bless him. Hydroelectric station
As part of its efforts to increase the proportion of renewable and clean energy in Dubai, the Authority is implementing a 250 megawatt power generation station project using stored hydropower technology in Hatta. It is the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region, and its storage capacity will reach 1,500 megawatt hours, with a lifespan of up to 80 years.
The station will rely on producing electricity by taking advantage of the water stored in the Hatta Dam and another upper dam constructed in the mountainous region.
In addition to the hydroelectric station, the project to establish fine water filtration stations with a micro-distillation system (three million gallons of water per day), which uses Hatta Dam water during emergency situations, was completed. The Authority and the “Union Water and Electricity” also completed the implementation of the water connection project. The strategic project in the Masfout area, which allows the exchange of up to two million gallons per day of drinking water for use in emergency situations and for any other purposes.
The Authority and Abu Dhabi Transmission and Control Company (TRANSCO) have completed the strategic connection project in the Al Madam area, which allows additional water supplies (about 35 million gallons per day) for use in emergency situations between the two sides in order to reduce the impact of potential outages during normal operating conditions. The Authority contributes with other projects and initiatives in The Hatta area includes the “Shams Dubai” initiative, which aims to encourage building and home owners to install photovoltaic panels on roofs to produce electricity from solar energy and connect them to the network. The Authority also began operating the water tank it built in the Hatta region, with a capacity of 30 million gallons of desalinated water.
