She explained that the preventive program, which is the first of its kind in the world, aims to reduce the percentage of people at risk of contracting the disease by at least 10% by 2021, and targets the groups most at risk of contracting the disease among members of society.
She explained that the “Lifestyles” clinic is concerned with providing integrated preventive services to prevent chronic, non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, arterial diseases, and others, by focusing on changing the unhealthy lifestyle, as this clinic aims to reduce the incidence of diabetes in the community of the Emirate. Dubai is among the groups most vulnerable to the disease, by reducing risk factors such as being overweight, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet, psychological stress, and smoking. Statistics from the International Diabetes Federation revealed that the average spending on diabetics in the Emirates is estimated at about 9.8 billion dirhams annually, and the percentage of people with diabetes reached about 17.3% in 2017, which is a high percentage compared to other countries. As for the Emirate of Dubai, the percentage of people with diabetes reached about 15.2%, and the percentage of people at risk of infection is about 15.8%, based on the results of the Dubai Diabetes Household Survey 2017.
Regarding the clinic’s mechanism of operation, Obaid said: “The participant is selected through primary health care doctors, or through the (Hayati) application, where cases are evaluated, and the possibility of them being exposed to diabetes is determined, during the next ten years, using a measurement of the risk of developing diabetes.” ».
