The entry of the well into production follows the rapid installation of surface infrastructure to connect the find to existing networks.
Well testing and initial output
The Watda exploratory well was drilled to approximately 15,000 feet, according to the ministry, and logging data identified gas-bearing formations in the target interval. Final production tests recorded sustained output of 40 million cubic feet per day, equivalent to roughly 1.13 million cubic metres daily. Operators have already begun flowing gas to nearby facilities while completing system checks ahead of full integration.
Operator and joint-venture structure
Khalda Petroleum Company led drilling and testing operations on the Watda well, the ministry said, under a partnership framework that includes the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and international partners. The joint-venture structure has overseen the technical programme, from deep drilling to production evaluation, and coordinated approvals with state regulators. Company officials described the find as a continuation of exploration momentum across Egypt’s Western Desert basin.
Infrastructure work and investment
To bring the new production online, the operator installed a roughly 10-kilometre production line at an investment of about $2.3 million, the ministry reported. That short tie-in enabled immediate gas flows while final commissioning proceeds, speeding the transition from discovery to supply. The modest cost and short construction schedule helped accelerate delivery of gas to market without waiting for larger field development works.
Integration with the national grid
Ministry statements indicated the Watda well’s output will be tied into the national gas grid before July 31, 2026, providing a firm date for network integration. Connection to the grid will enable distribution to power generators, industry and domestic consumers, supporting seasonal and economic demand. Officials said the tie-in will also facilitate further appraisal and phased development of the structure as data from ongoing production tests are analysed.
Domestic supply implications
A steady 40 MMcf/d contribution from the Watda well will provide near-term relief to local supply balances and reduce the need for immediate imports in constrained months. While a single well is not a basin-scale supply shift, the discovery adds material incremental volume and validates the prospectivity of the surrounding acreage. Analysts note that early production from exploration wells can materially lower development risk and prompt accelerated appraisal drilling.
Next steps for appraisal and development
Following the successful test, the operator plans follow-up appraisal work to delineate the gas-bearing reservoir and estimate recoverable volumes, the ministry said. Additional seismic interpretation and targeted sidetracks or appraisal wells may be undertaken to expand production and define a field development plan. Authorities stressed that commercialisation decisions will follow reservoir evaluation and alignment with national supply requirements.
