Emirates has completed a major milestone in its fleet renewal programme, finishing comprehensive cabin refurbishments on 100 widebody aircraft since November 2022. The Emirates fleet refurbishment programme reached the centenary mark after 44 months of engineering work at the airline’s Dubai maintenance hub. The carrier said the work includes upgrades to cabins, installation of a new premium economy section and extensive component renewals across Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s.
Milestone achieved at Dubai engineering centre
The carrier’s engineering centre completed full cabin renewals for 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s as part of the project. Emirates said the programme represents the largest known interior refurbishment effort carried out by any airline globally, with more than half the planned fleet changes already delivered. The company expects to refit roughly 20 additional aircraft by the end of December 2026, keeping the project on a multi-year timetable.
Scale and scope of the refurbishment programme
The Emirates fleet refurbishment covers deep interior overhauls rather than incremental retrofits, with teams removing and rebuilding entire cabin interiors. Work included reconfiguring cabin layouts, installing new premium economy seats, and integrating more than 4,000 individual parts for A380s and roughly 2,500 parts for 777s. The programme has seen more than 3,800 premium economy seats fitted across the upgraded aircraft so far.
Workforce, hours and engineering complexity
More than 400 engineers and technicians at the Emirates Engineering Centre have logged about 4.4 million man-hours on the project to date. On average the team has refurbished 28 aircraft per year since the programme began, delivering tight turnarounds while managing complex structural and systems work. The carrier highlighted the need for precision reassembly and rigorous testing to ensure every aircraft returned to service in excellent technical condition.
Investment, passenger comfort and product goals
Emirates allocated a $5 billion investment to the fleet refresh, underscoring the airline’s aim to raise passenger experience across all cabins. The refurbishment is positioned to deliver consistent product standards, increased comfort, and enhanced service elements for customers flying on both A380 and 777 types. Emirates leadership said the programme supports the carrier’s broader strategy to maintain a competitive premium offering on key long-haul routes.
Supply chain and project management innovations
Delivering a project of this magnitude required collaboration with more than 100 suppliers and the development of new logistical processes. Emirates Engineering adapted bespoke project-management solutions to synchronise parts flow, cabin installations and certification activities within tight hangar schedules. Officials said the centre rethought traditional update cycles to scale repetitive, high-quality cabin work while preserving safety and airworthiness standards.
Operational impacts and fleet readiness
The refurbishment effort was executed alongside Emirates’ commercial flying schedule, with engineers coordinating dock time to avoid significant operational disruption. Each aircraft underwent structural inspections and system upgrades as part of the interior renewals, ensuring compliance with regulatory and airline operational requirements. With 100 aircraft now completed, Emirates expects improved consistency of passenger experience across its widebody fleet in the coming seasons.
Emirates leadership emphasized that the programme required meticulous planning and specialised skills to rework two of the industry’s largest passenger airplane types internally in Dubai. The carrier said the outcome demonstrates its in-house technical capabilities and readiness to manage large-scale fleet modernization while keeping aircraft availability aligned with network demand.
