Emirates launches second daily A350 between Dubai and Colombo from August 8 2026

Emirates A350 Colombo service to double Premium Economy with second daily A350 from August 8, 2026

Emirates launches a second daily A350 service between Dubai and Colombo from August 8, 2026, increasing Premium Economy capacity and strengthening connections

Emirates A350 Colombo service confirmed from August 8 2026

Emirates will operate a second daily Airbus A350 flight on the Dubai Colombo route beginning August 8 2026, the carrier said in a service update. The move, announced as part of the airline’s network adjustments, replaces a Boeing 777 on the EK648/649 rotation and expands seat options for travellers.

The announcement names the change as effective from August 8 2026 and underlines Emirates commitment to enhanced comfort for passengers travelling to and from Sri Lanka. The airline currently mixes A350s and 777s across its Colombo frequencies and will add the extra A350 to the existing schedule.

Flight numbers timings and aircraft swap detailed

The additional A350 will operate on flight EK648 departing Dubai International at 16.10 and arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport Colombo at 22.10 local time. The return service EK649 will depart Colombo at 02.55 and arrive in Dubai at 05.50 local time, giving passengers overnight connection options.

Emirates said the EK648/649 rotation had previously been flown by a Boeing 777 and that the swap to an A350 is intended to standardise equipment and capacity on the route. The A350 is noted for fuel efficiency and passenger comfort features that Emirates has configured for regional and longhaul sectors.

Premium Economy capacity to double on EK648 EK649 rotation

Replacing the 777 on the EK648/649 rotation with an A350 will double the number of Premium Economy seats available on that service according to the carrier. Emirates introduced Premium Economy across parts of its longhaul fleet and the extra A350 brings larger Premium Economy inventory to the Dubai Colombo market.

The added capacity is expected to relieve demand pressure on popular services and provide more options for both leisure and business travellers. By increasing Premium Economy supply, Emirates aims to capture segments of the market seeking an elevated economy experience without moving to Business Class.

Operational footprint four daily frequencies and 40 year milestone

Emirates currently serves Colombo with four daily frequencies using a combination of A350 and 777 equipment, the airline said. That network comprises three direct daily flights between Dubai and Colombo plus a daily service routed via Malé in the Maldives, maintaining broad connectivity for the Sri Lankan market.

This year marks four decades since Emirates first launched services to Colombo, and the carrier highlighted that it now links the Sri Lankan gateway to roughly 140 destinations across its global network. The milestone underlines the longrunning commercial ties and passenger demand between the UAE and Sri Lanka.

Connectivity benefits for Sri Lanka and transit passengers

The revised operation with a second daily A350 is positioned to improve onward connections for transit passengers using Dubai as a hub, offering enhanced Premium Economy availability and consistent aircraft type for smoother transfers. Arrival and departure times support both late evening travel into Colombo and early morning connections out of Sri Lanka.

Market observers say the equipment change can also support cargo uplift and operational reliability on the route, as the A350’s range and payload characteristics differ from the 777. For Sri Lankan travellers and expatriate communities, the service adjustment delivers more choice and potentially better fares as capacity increases.

Emirates’s timetable change signals a broader trend among network carriers to optimise fleet deployment and cabin mix to meet evolving passenger preferences while maintaining gateway connectivity for key regional markets. The second daily A350 on the Dubai Colombo trunk line reflects that strategy and will take effect from August 8 2026.
