Etihad launches Abu Dhabi Dhaka route with inaugural Boeing 777 flight
Etihad Airways has opened a new Abu Dhabi Dhaka route to meet rising passenger and cargo demand between the UAE and Bangladesh, starting service on 26 June.
Etihad Abu Dhabi Dhaka route begins operations with full inaugural flight and four weekly services using Boeing 777 aircraft to strengthen trade and diaspora links between the two countries.
Inaugural flight and schedule
The first commercial Etihad flight to Dhaka departed Abu Dhabi on 26 June at 2200 and arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport the following morning on 27 June.
Flight EY382 operated the route and marked the launch of a planned four times weekly service that links Abu Dhabi directly with Bangladesh.
The schedule is designed to serve both passenger needs and cargo flows along the South Asia corridor.
Etihad confirmed the frequency and aircraft type as part of a broader effort to expand connectivity through its Abu Dhabi hub.
Aircraft configuration and passenger offering
Etihad operates the new route using Boeing 777 aircraft configured to carry both premium and high density economy traffic.
Each flight offers 28 business class seats that convert to fully flat beds and 374 economy seats to accommodate a broad mix of travellers.
The configuration supports longer haul comfort for premium passengers while providing ample economy capacity for families and migrant workers.
Onboard product choices and seat mix were selected to reflect demand patterns between the UAE and Bangladesh.
Cargo capacity and logistics benefits
The Boeing 777 also brings significant bellyhold capacity for air freight on each rotation.
Etihad highlighted that the new service will increase cargo availability through Abu Dhabi and help meet growing logistics needs between the two markets.
Carrying both consumer goods and time sensitive shipments, the route aims to ease supply chain links for exporters and importers.
Industry observers say added cargo lift on passenger aircraft can be a rapid way to expand freight connectivity before dedicated freighter services are considered.
Response to demand from the Bangladeshi community
Etihad cited strong demand from the Bangladeshi community in the UAE as a major driver for the route.
The carrier pointed to one of the world’s largest Bangladeshi diasporas in the Emirates and the need for more direct services to support family travel and community ties.
Executives also noted the route will facilitate travel for Bangladeshis based across the GCC as well as passengers connecting from North America and the United Kingdom via Abu Dhabi.
The service provides a direct option that shortens journey times and increases flight choices for frequent travellers.
Statements from Etihad leadership
Etihad’s chief executive Antonoaldo Neves said the full load on the inaugural flight underlines the strength of links between the UAE and Bangladesh and the ongoing demand in both travel and cargo markets.
Neves emphasized that the new route offers a comfortable and direct connection for families and the broader Bangladeshi community while enhancing trade flows.
The carrier framed the launch as part of a strategic expansion through Abu Dhabi aimed at improving network connectivity to high demand markets in South Asia.
Etihad also pointed to its role in supporting economic ties and facilitating easier movement for business and visiting family members.
Regional connectivity and economic implications
The Abu Dhabi Dhaka route strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional hub for travel between South Asia and global destinations.
Improved connectivity typically supports tourism, remittances and bilateral trade by reducing transit times and increasing available seat and cargo capacity.
Airlines and airports in the region have been adjusting networks to match shifting travel patterns after recent years of recovery.
For Bangladesh, additional direct services from major Gulf hubs can boost inbound tourism and provide exporters with expanded access to international markets.
The launch of Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Dhaka route on 26 June with Boeing 777 equipment and four weekly rotations responds directly to passenger and freight demand while reinforcing community and commercial ties between the UAE and Bangladesh.
