The Interior Ministry announced that the Bordeaux wildfire is now under control after more than a week of intense firefighting in the pine forests along France’s Atlantic coast. The Bordeaux wildfire remains smouldering in isolated pockets, but authorities said it is no longer spreading. Officials described a massive local response that included aircraft, ground crews and volunteers to blunt the blaze that officials said has not been equalled in scale since 1949.

Laurent Nunez told reporters that the blaze has been brought under control and is no longer advancing across new terrain. He cautioned, however, that smouldering areas persist and that full extinguishment will take additional time and resources. Local authorities estimate that roughly 42,000 hectares of pine forest have been consumed by the flames along the Atlantic shoreline. Evacuations and Return of Residents
More than 220,000 people were evacuated at the height of the emergency, according to regional officials, many from coastal towns and campgrounds near the burning woodland. Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas said the majority of evacuees have been able to return to their homes after safety assessments and clearance of immediate hazards. She warned, however, that residents in zones where the fire still smoulders may need to remain away until hotspots are fully extinguished.

Fire crews responded with a combination of ground teams, volunteer brigades and water-dropping aircraft to tackle the rapidly advancing flames. Officials said that aircraft were critical in containing the fire’s spread, particularly where terrain limited access for ground vehicles. Meanwhile, authorities reported a separate major fire in the Var department in southeast France that flared on Friday and was contained overnight by firefighting teams. Officials noted that gusty winds have repeatedly accelerated fire behaviour across multiple departments, challenging suppression efforts and increasing the speed of evacuation orders. Local prefects continue to monitor weather forecasts closely to anticipate flare-ups.
National Fire Toll and Climate Context
Satellite data from the European Forest Fire Information System indicate that approximately 92,000 hectares have burned across France so far this year, the highest national total recorded in the past two decades. Scientists and officials have linked the intensity and frequency of this year’s wildfires to repeated heatwaves and prolonged drought conditions that have left vegetation exceptionally dry. Authorities warned that climate-driven extremes are complicating both prevention and response strategies for future seasons.
Emergency officials continue to advise vigilance even as the Bordeaux wildfire is declared under control, with patrols and monitoring teams deployed to detect and suppress any rekindling. Local councils and regional agencies have opened recovery centres to assist displaced families and to coordinate rebuilding and compensation processes.
