The two friends, Hamad, were victims of a bike accident and a deadly street.

Khorfakkan-Fujairah Road is still a constant scene of fatal accidents, the latest of which was last Sunday. The victims were two young citizens who were friends of the same age, with the same name, spirit and features.

The two friends were riding a small motorbike when they were hit by a speeding car, which led to the debate in local circles in the emirate focusing on family supervision of children and young people, and not allowing them to ride bikes before the legal age, in addition to the poor condition of the road on which the accident occurred.

The two young men, Hamad Obaid Abdulrahman Al Kaabi and Hamad Mohammed Salem Al Kaabi, were childhood friends. They used to play and have fun together, and they shared the same school and the same class. They were killed together in the same place, when a Lexus car driven by a young man in his twenties collided with their motorcycle.

Al-Emarat Al-Youm visited the families of the two young men in the mourning houses in the town of Marbah in Fujairah, and their families narrated the details of the tragedy. Ali Obaid Al Kaabi, Hamad Obaid’s brother, began by riding a modern bike on the Fujairah-Khorfakkan Road, which he described as “one of the most dangerous streets, with accidents occurring almost daily, and victims falling on it, but there are no solutions.”

He stated, quoting witnesses, that the young driver of the car was driving his vehicle coming from Fujairah to Khorfakkan at excessive speed, as the speed limit is 80 km/h, while his speed was exceeding 100 km/h, so he overtook a number of vehicles, and on his way he was surprised by the presence of a radar, so he suddenly changed his lane and took a side street, where he was surprised by the two young men on the bike, and he was unable to avoid them, so he collided with them, which led to them flying a distance of 10 meters and falling on the main street.

Al Kaabi blamed the road authorities for “neglecting residents’ demands to improve the conditions of the street, which lacks traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, roundabouts and intersections,” and he believed that design errors were behind many accidents on this street.

As for (Umm Saif), the mother of the deceased, she said, “Her son used to ask permission before leaving the house, but the last time he went out, he did not do so, and she was busy praying.”

She added that she “could not believe it when she was told that Hamad had died in a car accident,” noting that “he had special importance in the house, due to his hyperactivity and love for his family.” She recalled his gift to her a few days ago on the occasion of Mother’s Day, which was a ring. She looked at it on her hand and her sobs and tears rose.

According to Maitha, Hamad Obaid’s sister, her brother was friendly and close to children, and was called “Barq” at home. She pointed out that Hamad was his close friend, and had the same name, and they also had similar features.

At the funeral held for his young friend Hamad Mohammed, shock was evident on the faces of his family, who asked drivers not to be reckless and to exceed the speed limits.

Umm Jassim said, “My son was a victim of recklessness and rashness, and the lack of proper planning for the street,” adding that she “could no longer bear the tragedies because of him,” explaining that “three of her sons were involved in accidents on this street, and she lost one of them, Hamad.”

Umm Jassim recalled the last moments she spent with Hamad, when he came to her and started massaging her arms and shoulders. She asked him why, but he did not answer her. She pointed out that Hamad was regular in his prayers, had a calm nature, and was loved by all his peers and family. His sister Aisha pointed out that he was ranked tenth among 14 brothers and sisters, and was very good at ninth grade. His closest friend was Hamad Obaid, who died with him in the accident.

Regarding the day of the accident, she said: “We heard the sound of ambulances and my mother went out to find out what was happening. Then her phone rang and the caller informed her of the news. She collapsed and fell into a state of hysteria.”

In addition, the Director of Public Relations at Fujairah Police, Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Ali Al Hamar, stated that “the phenomenon of bicycles among teenagers is spreading remarkably in the region, and requires the intervention of parents to protect their children,” noting that “the police hesitate to pursue young bicycle drivers, lest they be involved in accidents during the chase.”

Al Hamar stressed that “the role of the family is important in this regard, because the law prohibits driving this type of small motorcycle for those under the age of 16.”
