The head of the Family Guidance and Reform Department at the Ras Al Khaimah Courts, Jassim Mohammed Al-Makki, said that most of the divorce requests received by the department since the beginning of this year were from wives and not husbands, adding that the main reason behind most of these cases is the husband’s refusal to provide domestic and family needs. He spends his monthly salary on his personal desires.
He explained to “Emirates Today” that most of the cases were of wives suffering from stifling financial problems in their homes, as a result of the husbands’ refusal to give them household expenses.
He added that the wives informed the Guidance Department that they were living without receiving any money from their husbands, and that the husbands refused to give them money to buy their personal needs.
He stated that the department noticed, through the problems it received, that some men are still teenagers despite being married and having children. He expressed his surprise at spending their salaries on nights out, personal expenses, tourist trips and travel outside the country, pointing out that they are wasting their money for the sake of Personal enjoyment, noting that there is nothing left of the salary to meet the needs of the children or the house, which makes the wife resort to divorce and request alimony from the court to guarantee her rights. And the rights of her children.
He added that some of the cases that came to the department were of a husband who refused to spend on his wife and children, due to the accumulation of bank debts on him, deducting large installments from his salary, and spending the rest of the salary on his personal needs.
He continued that the wife initially requests that the husband be obligated to support his family and provide food and basic needs for his children, to protect the family from disintegration and divorce.
He pointed out that the husband usually agrees to provide for the full needs of his family, and to give his wife the monthly allowance for the house, but he only commits to that for a limited period, which prompts the wife to request a divorce and submit a petition to the competent court to prevent the husband from spending on her and his children.
He explained that most of the cases of divorce and family problems recorded by the department over the past years were alimony.
