UAE airports continue their leadership globally in sustainability and innovation

UAE airports continue their leadership in the areas of sustainability and innovation, by implementing projects and initiatives that enhance environmental efficiency and improve travelers ’experience.

These efforts show the state’s commitment to developing a sustainable and innovative airline sector that keeps pace with global developments, and enhances the UAE’s position as a global airline.

The UAE has strengthened its position as one of the most prominent international aviation centers during the year 2024, as the sector witnessed prominent developments that included more investments in infrastructure, enhancing clean energy initiatives, and several initiatives related to sustainability support in the sector, whether in terms of expansion of the use of sustainable aviation fuel, or initiatives related to ground operations in airports by service providers.

Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi is a prominent example of the state’s sustainability commitment, as Abu Dhabi airports announced last February that the airport obtained the classification of “3 pearls” within the evaluation system with “pearls”, which is affiliated with the “sustainability” program, in the construction phase, which makes it one of the largest buildings in the Emirates that achieves this prestigious classification, which reflects the airport’s commitment to the strict environmental standards in design and construction.

The airport landscape coordination project reflects an area of 480,000 square meters of green spaces with sustainable design, new standards for sustainable design in the United Arab Emirates, which enhances its center in innovation and environmental commitment.

The airport is designed to provide an experiment that is the most innovative and smooth between international airports in this sector, as it corresponds to the highest quality standards, and exceeds the expectations of travelers.

In turn, Dubai International Airport won a global appreciation of its efforts in reducing carbon emissions, as it obtained the adoption of the “shift” from the fourth level of the carbon emissions program for airports, affiliated with the International Airports Council, to become, as of September 2024, among the best 5% of the airports participating all over the world that achieve this achievement.

The year 2024 witnessed a group of strategic advertisements that strengthened the performance of the aviation sector, the most prominent of which is the announcement of the expansion and start of the construction of the new travelers building at Al Maktoum International Airport at a cost of 128 billion dirhams, to be the largest in the world with a final capacity of 260 million passengers, and to be five times the current Dubai International Airport, and to include 400 aircraft gates.

The “Al Maktoum International Airport” in Dubai represents a symbol of this anticipation, as it embodies the emirate’s ambition in global leadership and the leadership of travel in the coming years, which is expected to witness an increase in the movement of travelers by more than 4% in the Emirates.

Al Maktoum Airport is not limited to being a crossing gateway for travelers, but rather a nucleus of a new integrated city that provides an ideal environment for living, work and investment.

Sharjah Airport pays great attention to environmental responsibility and sustainability, and its advanced position has strengthened the carbon accreditation program for airports applied by the International Airports Council, by renewing its approval as a neutral airport.
