UAE University students win first and fourth place in the “Kibo” Challenge

A team of students from the United Arab Emirates University won first place locally and fourth place globally in the fifth edition of the Kibo Robot Programming Challenge, organized by the Japanese Aerospace Agency (JAXA), in cooperation with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center and NASA, in Japan, with the participation of 15 countries.

Student Maryam Al Ketbi, team leader, pointed out that this competition is considered one of the international competitions for robot programming, as it was held in two stages. The first stage was with the participation of various universities in the UAE and witnessed great competition, as the university team won first place at the state level, among Five college teams

She said that in the second stage, we were able to enter the competition with great enthusiasm, to achieve advanced results, and through continuous training, we were able to confront students from international universities, and win fourth place after strong competition.

The students expressed their thanks for the continuous support from our professors and the university administration who helped them achieve this great achievement, and look forward to continuing their hard work and diligence to be the best ambassadors for our university and our nation in all forums.

The team demonstrated high skills in identifying and recognizing images “in real time inside the international spacecraft” using artificial intelligence, and controlling the robotWith the aim of determining the tools that the astronaut needs during his journey, the team obtained the highest score during the first qualifying stage, and based on that result, it was qualified to participate in the final challenges in Japan.

The student team included “Maryam Al-Ketbi and Akio Al-Najjar, from the College of Engineering, and Sarah Al-Marzouqi, Muhammad Al-Muhammad, Hussein Al-Imam, and Abdulaziz Al-Kanakri from the College of Information Technology,” under the supervision of Dr. Fadi Al-Najjar from the College of Information Technology.
