UAE travellers embrace last‑minute summer travel bookings, Wego data shows
Wego data shows UAE travellers favour last‑minute summer travel bookings, with 70% of flight searches made within a month of departure and strong spikes to Georgia, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
UAE travellers are increasingly making last‑minute summer travel bookings, with the majority searching for flights in the month before departure, according to new data from travel marketplace Wego. The report highlights a shift toward flexible planning and short lead‑time purchases among Emirati holidaymakers this summer. Destinations combining easy access, value and varied experiences have attracted the most interest.
Wego reports 70% of searches within a month of departure
Wego’s analytics indicate roughly 70% of flight searches from the UAE occurred during the month preceding travel dates.
This pattern reflects a marked preference for shorter planning horizons, with a significant share of trips being researched and booked close to departure. The platform identified this as a dominant behaviour across multiple summer destinations.
Georgia, Turkey and Uzbekistan post the largest search increases
Searches for flights to Georgia rose by 7.8% in July compared with the same period last year, while Turkey recorded a 34.5% jump in July searches.
Uzbekistan led growth across all listed markets, with searches for June (for July travel) increasing by 78.4% year‑on‑year. These gains underline growing interest in a wider set of regional and intercontinental options among UAE travellers.
Short booking windows and last‑minute purchases evident for popular routes
Wego’s data show the average booking window for flights to Georgia and Turkey was about 25 days before departure.
Between 8% and 10% of bookings to those two destinations were completed in the week immediately before travel, demonstrating a meaningful level of last‑minute conversion among searchers.
Airfare ranges and lead times across highlighted destinations
Reported starting fares varied by market, with flights to Turkey beginning at around AED 1,338 and to Georgia from AED 1,475.
Uzbekistan fares started near AED 1,309, while Vietnam and Thailand had higher entry prices at approximately AED 1,806 and AED 2,477 respectively. Bali recorded the highest starting fare among the list at about AED 3,009.
Longer average booking windows in some Asian destinations
While several markets saw close‑in bookings, Vietnam and Bali showed slightly longer average lead times, at roughly 27 and 28 days respectively.
This suggests that travellers targeting more distant or complex itineraries are still allowing a few additional weeks to secure flights and plan logistics before departure.
Wego executive links trends to flexible travel preferences
Mamoun Hamidain, Wego’s chief business officer, attributed the booking patterns to an emerging preference among UAE travellers for flexible planning.
He said travellers are prioritising destinations that offer ease of access, price value and a range of experiences, and that spots balancing those elements are drawing notable summer interest.
Implications for airlines and travel services operating in the UAE market
Airlines and travel intermediaries serving the UAE may need to recalibrate inventory and pricing strategies to capture last‑minute demand and convert short lead‑time searches into completed sales.
Ancillary services, dynamic pricing and targeted last‑minute offers could improve conversion rates for carriers and booking platforms as the summer season progresses.
Travel agencies and tour operators should also monitor shifting search patterns and price sensitivity across the highlighted routes. Tailored packages and flexible cancellation policies are likely to appeal to customers who plan on shorter notice.
Consumer awareness of fare windows and realistic expectations about availability will remain important as demand concentrates closer to departure dates. Travellers weighing cost versus convenience may find a range of options across nearby and regional markets, while long‑haul and island destinations typically show higher starting fares and slightly longer planning horizons.
As summer travel continues, Wego’s data signals a sustained appetite in the UAE for quickly planned international breaks, with Georgia, Turkey and Uzbekistan emerging as prominent beneficiaries of this short‑notice booking trend.
