8 conditions for equivalency of students’ certificates in British and American schools

The Ministry included new procedures for 14 conditions for the equivalency of the American secondary school certificate, including eight basic conditions and six sub-conditions, according to the track system on which the equivalence will be based (general, advanced, and elite), while it specified 13 conditions for the equivalency of the British certificate, including eight basic conditions and five conditions to be chosen between. Depending on the type of track, noting that the decision will take effect at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year.

The Ministry called on private schools to arrange their conditions in accordance with the effective date of the decision.

In detail, the new procedures included eight common conditions for the equivalence of the American and British certificates, which are that the educational system and curriculum applied be recognized and licensed in the country, that the educational body granting the certificate be recognized and licensed to work in the country, and that the school be accredited by the educational body granting the certificate. The procedures for equivalency of American high school diplomas with the general track system required passing the English language, mathematics and science subjects, including physics, social studies or humanities, with no less than four credit hours in each subject, with the exception of social studies and humanities for only three hours.

While the procedures for equating the certificate with the advanced track required that the student pass the English language and mathematics subjects during grades nine through 12, with an average of not less than four credit hours of study, the physics subject calculus based, and the subject of chemistry or biology, and that one of the science subjects be at the AP level, in addition to Social studies or humanities subject with no less than three credit hours.

The conditions for equivalency of the certificate in the elite track included passing the English language and mathematics subjects for no less than four accredited academic hours, provided that mathematics includes the subject AP-calculusab AB, in grades nine through twelfth, in addition to passing the physics subject including Ap Physics C:Electrity and magnetism in addition to Ap physis C:mechanics, and passing the chemistry or biology subject, and that one of the science subjects is at the AP level and any other subject is at the AP level, provided that Islamic education and the Arabic language are not counted toward Include it.


Provisions of the decision

The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the provisions of the ministerial decision regarding the equivalence of British and American secondary school certificates apply to secondary school completion certificates issued by private schools by the end of the 2021-2022 academic year, and the ministerial decision regarding the regulatory guide for the equivalence of private school certificates continues to apply.
