Yesterday, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that it has achieved 94.15% progress in the hydroelectric station project using stored water energy technology that it is implementing in Hatta, where generators are currently being installed on the site in preparation for the trial operation expected in the first quarter of 2025.

Filling of the station’s upper dam, which consists of a main wall 72 meters high and a side dam 37 meters high, was also completed as part of the stages of preparation for operation.

The authority stated in a statement that the station relies on water stored in the Hatta Dam and a new upper dam, as the water will be pumped using advanced turbines that rely on clean energy from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex, explaining that these turbines work in reverse to pump water to the dam. The upper dam stores energy and then uses it to generate electricity by flowing water from the upper dam to the Hatta Dam through a 1.2 km underground water tunnel.

The station’s production capacity is expected to reach 250 megawatts and a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt hours, with a lifespan of up to 80 years. This project is the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region, and the value of investments in it amounts to about 1.421 billion dirhams, and it is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2025.

This project comes within a comprehensive vision to develop the Hatta region and promote sustainable development there, including creating innovative job opportunities for citizens.
