UAE jiu-jitsu team leaves for Sanya ahead of Asian Beach Games 2026

UAE jiu-jitsu team departs for Sanya for the 2026 Asian Beach Games (April 22–30), aiming for podium finishes after intensive training and a balanced roster ready for tough continental opposition.

The UAE jiu-jitsu team departed for Sanya, China, on April 19 to compete in the sixth Asian Beach Games, scheduled from April 22 to April 30, 2026. The delegation arrives after an intensive preparation phase designed to sharpen technical, tactical and physical readiness ahead of the continental event. With a balanced lineup across men’s and women’s categories, the squad aims to reinforce the UAE’s leading position in jiu-jitsu across Asia.

Team Departs for Sanya Ahead of April 22–30 Games

The delegation left the UAE on April 19 and will take part in competitions that form part of a wider multi-sport programme organised by the Olympic Council of Asia. The Asian Beach Games return after the previous edition in 2016, bringing renewed interest and deeper fields across many sports. Officials described the timing and scale of the event as an important test ahead of other regional and global competitions.

Preparation and Technical Focus Emphasised by Federation

Mubarak Saleh Al Menhali, director of the technical department at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and head of mission, said the trip is part of a deliberate strategy to develop the national competitive system. He highlighted extended technical sessions and scenario-based sparring aimed at improving decision-making under pressure. Coaches have prioritised adaptability to different competition styles, with practice bouts simulating the tactical patterns expected from top Asian opponents.

Athletes Speak on Readiness and Strategy

Leading competitor Asma Al Hosani said the team focused on reading opponents and executing high-precision techniques during training camp. She stressed that speed of execution and split-second decision-making have been central in recent sessions to secure decisive results in tight matches. Several other athletes noted an emphasis on endurance and recovery protocols to cope with the compact schedule of beach-format competition.

Selected Roster Balances Experience and Emerging Talent

The UAE will field a balanced roster across genders, reflecting depth in domestic development pathways. The men’s list includes Omar Ali Al Suwaidi, Khalid Mohammed Al Shehi, Sultan Mohammed Hasan, Sultan Emad Jabr, Mehdi Khalid Al Awlaqi and Sultan Faisal Al Husani. The women’s squad features Hessa Thani Al Shamisi, Asma Hasan Al Hosani, Zamzam Mohammed Al Hammadi, Shamsa Khamis Al Amri, Shamma Yousef Al Kalbani and Mahra Mohammed Mahfouz.

Coaches said the selection mixes proven medal contenders with younger athletes who have progressed through national programmes. The federation views the combination as a way to maintain continuity while giving rising competitors exposure to high-level continental matches.

Scale of the Games and Competitive Challenges

The Sanya event gathers roughly 3,800 athletes from 45 Asian nations competing across 14 sports, underscoring the scale and competitiveness of the Games. Jiu-jitsu will feature athletes from national teams with varied technical schools, increasing the tactical complexity for every match. Officials acknowledged that the broad participation raises the bar for medal contention but also provides a valuable benchmarking opportunity.

Medal Targets and Broader Strategic Goals

The federation set clear ambitions for medal success while emphasising development outcomes beyond podiums. Officials expect the UAE jiu-jitsu team to challenge for multiple medals and to use the experience to refine technical programs for future continental and global events. The mission includes performance analysis staff who will capture match data to inform training cycles and talent identification back home.

The Asian Beach Games also serve as a platform to promote jiu-jitsu as a growing sport in the region and to reinforce the UAE’s status as a continental leader. Success in Sanya is seen as part of a longer-term plan to sustain competitive excellence and expand the sport’s grassroots reach.

The delegation will compete across the scheduled days from April 22 to April 30, 2026, with team officials and coaches closely monitoring athletes’ recovery and match readiness. The UAE jiu-jitsu team’s performance in Sanya will be assessed against both immediate medal outcomes and its contribution to the federation’s longer-term development strategy.
