UAE men's basketball team seeks to defend Gulf Games title in Doha

UAE national basketball team to defend Gulf Games crown in Doha as group play begins May 15

UAE national basketball team to defend its Gulf Games crown in Doha, facing Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi in group play May 15–17; semis May 19, final May 20.

The UAE national basketball team will travel to Doha this month to defend the Gulf Games title it won at the last edition in Kuwait. The fourth Gulf Games run from May 11 to May 22 in the Qatari capital, with the UAE opening its campaign against hosts Qatar on May 15. The federation confirmed the squad’s aim is to retain the crown rather than simply participate, citing strong domestic form among players.

UAE national basketball team targets title defence in Doha

The UAE Basketball Federation has prioritised the Gulf Games as the first external test of the year for the senior men’s team. Secretary-General Salem Al Mutawa said the federation expects the squad to compete strongly and defend the title won in Kuwait.

Officials point to continuous competitive minutes in the local league as a key factor in the team’s readiness. The federation emphasised that selection and preparation were guided by current playing form rather than extended training camps alone.

Group schedule includes Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi from May 15–17

The team’s preliminary fixtures in Doha are compact and decisive, beginning with a high-profile opening game against Qatar on May 15. The Emirates then face Bahrain on May 16 before closing group play against Saudi Arabia on May 17.

The Gulf Games format advances the top four teams to semifinals, which are set for May 19, with the final scheduled for May 20. The tight schedule places a premium on recovery and game management over the three consecutive days of group matches.

Federation highlights players’ match fitness from local competitions

Salem Al Mutawa credited the elevated standard of the domestic league for the national squad’s preparedness. He noted that players’ regular appearances for their clubs have translated into improved individual conditioning and tactical sharpness.

The federation stressed that this season’s agenda is deliberately structured around competitive fixtures, using the league to maintain intensity rather than relying solely on centralized camps. Team officials say that approach has narrowed the gap between club and international demands.

Semifinal pairings and final set for May 19–20

Under the tournament rules, the first-placed team after group play will meet the fourth-placed side in one semifinal, while second meets third in the other. The knockout schedule leaves little margin for error in group results and seeding. Semifinal victories will secure a place in the May 20 final.

Coaches and federation staff have signalled tactical planning for potential opponents, with scouting efforts focused on adapting quickly to different playing styles. The condensed timeline for semifinals and the final intensifies the importance of rotation and depth.

Regional success and past title underline UAE ambitions

The UAE enters Doha off the momentum of the previous Gulf Games triumph in Kuwait, a milestone that has raised domestic expectations. Federation officials said that success by other national teams in regional competitions, including the women’s three-on-three gold, bolsters confidence across the program.

Retaining the Gulf Games title is viewed as both a regional objective and a stepping stone for wider continental ambitions. The federation is aiming to translate Gulf-level success into qualification and stronger performances in Asian competition.

Asian qualifiers and an Arab tournament shape the remainder of the calendar

Beyond the Gulf Games, the UAE’s calendar includes qualification matches for the Asian Championship, which remain a priority for the national program. Officials are also monitoring the Arab Basketball Federation’s schedule for a possible regional championship and will adjust plans accordingly.

Securing a berth at the Asian finals is a stated goal, and federation sources said resources will be allocated to ensure the team is competitive on the continental stage. The Gulf Games are therefore both an immediate objective and part of longer-term preparation.

Preparations in Doha will focus on translating domestic form into cohesive international performance without sacrificing player welfare. The federation has framed the campaign as an opportunity to assert the UAE’s standing in Gulf basketball and to build momentum ahead of Asian qualifiers.
