The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority identified what it considered “the most prominent reasons for failure” in the final examination for obtaining a vehicle driving license.

The reasons included not checking the driving position, which includes wearing a seat belt even for passengers in the back seat, as a number of examinees usually share the same vehicle during the examination, to take the examination sequentially.

The Authority’s latest statistics showed that the success rate in the vehicle driving test in Dubai reached 37% from the beginning of this year until the end of last September.

The Executive Director of the Authority’s Licensing Institution, Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, confirmed to Emirates Today that the number of those who passed the examination increased by 5% during the current year, compared to the number of those who passed during the same period last year, as a result of the improvement in the level of trainers’ performance and development. In the new systems used in driving training.

Al Ali considered that the smart tests currently adopted in driving tests have greatly contributed to raising the accuracy and transparency of test results, and thus increased the success rate over the past few years.

He added that the oversight systems used to audit the work of leadership training institutes also contributed to raising success rates.

Al Ali said that the reasons for failure in the driving test, which amounted to 63% during the period from the beginning of this year until the end of last September, include confidence as the key to success. However, he warned against exceeding the required level, because exaggerating the display of confidence may lead to… Many mistakes during the exam.

He continued that the second reason is “weak concentration,” as a result of not getting enough rest before taking the exam, pointing out that it distracts the mental state and leads to making mistakes and failing.

The reasons included the inability to choose the appropriate speed. Al Ali stated that exceeding speed is one of the reasons for failure, pointing out the necessity of maintaining the appropriate speed, appropriate for the road: “Do not exceed the permissible limits, and do not be slow, so as not to pose a danger to drivers on the road.”

He considered the lack of control over the vehicle’s brakes to be one of the most frequent causes of failures, advising against using the brakes suddenly or in a lax manner, because both behaviors may pose a danger. He called for making sure by looking in the rear-view mirror before stopping, and taking care to look in it regularly.

He pointed out the frequency of making mistakes when driving at turns and when changing lanes, as “the examinee fails if he does not check the blind spots while entering any road or any point while driving, by looking in the side mirrors and taking a close look over the shoulder.”

Regarding checking the driving position during the inspection, he said that it is an important matter, and it includes procedures such as checking the doors, adjusting the seat and vehicle mirrors, fastening the seat belt before moving in the car, and directing passengers in the back seat to fasten their seat belts as well.

As for the connection between failure in the exam and the element of dread and fear of the examination, Al Ali stressed that this problem was overcome with a number of remarkable measures, including “the necessity for the trainee to sit in the calm-down room before heading to the final practical examination required to obtain a driver’s license.”

He explained that the trainee sits with the examiner in the calming room, to get to know him and break his barrier of fear before moving to the vehicle, noting that “this usually has a positive effect on the examiner.”

He continued, “The examiner gives the examinee an idea, during the session, about the nature of the examination, and asks him not to worry or be nervous, so that this does not negatively affect his concentration and behavior during the exam.”
