Abundant supply and diversification of imports support discounts on vegetables and fruits


In the recent period, retail markets have witnessed competitive offers between sales outlets, which included extensive discounts on varieties of vegetables and fruits in varying proportions.

In a field tour, Emirates Today monitored that local vegetables accounted for the largest share of the discounts, compared to imported goods, while the average discounts offered ranged between 15 and 50%.

At a time when consumers considered the expansion of discounts on vegetables and fruits a positive aspect, as they are basic commodities for families, officials in retail outlets attributed the current discounts to the abundance of local seasonal supply, and the policy of diversifying imports from foreign markets, and stressed that the increase in supply from local farms was It has positive effects in price stability and the abundance of promotions.

Most of the reductions focus on specific varieties, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, eggplant, and peppers, especially of local origin, as well as pomegranates, bananas, apples, oranges, and watermelon.

In detail, consumer Abdul Rahim Othman said: “Outlets are currently witnessing expanded discounts on types of vegetables and fruits, which is one of the positive aspects that must be expanded, as these goods are among the basic requirements of families.”

For his part, consumer Hassan Imad said that some sales outlets have offered large discounts on types of vegetables and fruits, but these discounts are still limited in some stores, which requires expanding them to different sales outlets during the coming period, to achieve greater benefit for consumers according to their areas of residence.

In the same context, consumer Khaled Sami agreed that the recent reductions on vegetables and fruits are positive aspects that stores must be motivated to implement and expand, especially with the increased demand for these goods, as they are essential for families.

As for the consumer, Muhammad Abu Bakr, he stated that “most discount offers focus on specific items, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, eggplant, and peppers, especially those of local origin, in addition to pomegranates, bananas, apples, oranges, and watermelons,” calling for the need to expand these offers, especially with the abundance of supply in stores. .

In addition, Dr. Suhail Al Bastaki, CEO of Community Relations at Union Coop, told Emirates Today: “The markets have recently witnessed a remarkable abundance of supply, resulting from an increase in supply operations for varieties of vegetables and fruits of local origin, in addition to… Abundance and diversity of imported items, which in turn contributed to the increase in offers in the markets in varying proportions.”

He added: “The increase in competitiveness in offers reflects positively on consumers, as they obtain suitable prices for various offer items.” For his part, the Director of Marketing and Relations at Sharjah Cooperative, Faisal Khalid Al Nabouda, said, “The cooperative has launched various initiatives during the recent period, including expanded discounts, with large percentages, on vegetables and fruits of local origin, within the framework of stimulating, supporting and marketing national farm products.”

He explained that “the abundance of local seasonal products, and the increase and diversification of imports of vegetables and fruits, has stimulated many sales outlets during the recent period to expand their discount offers,” stressing that “the increase in supply from local farms to cooperatives and sales outlets in general has had many positive effects in Price stability and abundant promotions.

In a related context, Dilip Vishal, sales director at a retail chain, said, “The markets are currently witnessing expanded competition among sales outlets, offering discounts exceeding about 40% on varieties of vegetables and fruits.”

He explained that these discounts come with the support of the abundance of products of local origin, and keeping pace with the period of the local agricultural season, and in parallel with the growing seasons in many countries, which made various goods available at reasonable prices, which helps in offering them expanded discounts.
