The achievement — delivered over 44 months at the airline’s engineering centre in Dubai — includes upgrades to 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. Emirates said the work forms part of a broader $5 billion investment aimed at refreshing cabins and rolling out a new premium economy offering across the fleet.
100 Widebody Cabins Refit Completed
The programme reached the 100-aircraft mark in July 2026, after sustained activity since the project launch in November 2022. Emirates completed the interior overhaul of both flagship A380s and its 777 fleet, bringing consistent cabin products to long-haul routes. The move underscores the carrier’s priority to standardise passenger experience across aircraft types and maintain a competitive in-flight offering.
Scope, Scale and Investment
Emirates committed roughly $5 billion to the fleet refurbishment initiative, which covers cabin reconfigurations, seat replacements and technology upgrades. The programme is not limited to cosmetic work; it includes full teardown and reassembly of cabins, installation of new fixtures and components, and incorporation of a new premium economy cabin. The airline plans to update about 20 additional aircraft by December 31, 2026, a pace that will carry the project beyond its midpoint.
Workforce and Engineering Effort in Dubai
The upgrades were executed in-house at Emirates Engineering in Dubai, where a team of more than 400 engineers and technicians completed the work. Across 44 months, staff contributed approximately 4.4 million work hours to the programme, reflecting extensive technical planning and skilled craftsmanship. Emirates highlighted that the scale of the operation required precise logistics, specialist trades and tightly managed schedules to return aircraft to service on time.
Interior Upgrades and Passenger Offerings
A core element of the Emirates fleet refurbishment has been the introduction and rapid deployment of a premium economy product in modified widebody cabins. Teams installed over 3,800 new premium economy seats in the aircraft already refitted, expanding the carrier’s seat mix and route offerings. Beyond seating, the programme delivered modernised galleys, lavatories and finishes, as well as upgraded IFE and in-cabin systems to raise comfort across all travel classes.
Technical Complexity and Quality Control
Each overhaul involved complex engineering tasks including complete cabin disassembly and replacement of thousands of parts per aircraft model. Emirates Engineering managed inventory and reassembly using more than 4,000 items for each A380 and over 2,500 items for each Boeing 777, ensuring components met exacting safety and certification standards. Quality control processes were integral at every stage, with rigorous checks to secure airworthiness and passenger comfort before aircraft returned to scheduled service.
Operational Impact and Next Steps
Since work began in late 2022, the team has averaged roughly 28 aircraft over a 12‑month period, demonstrating a sustained throughput that balances maintenance windows and operational needs. The carrier expects to continue upgrading aircraft into 2026 and beyond, prioritising routes and aircraft types according to demand and network planning. Emirates said the programme will enable more consistent product availability on key long-haul services and support future commercial initiatives.
Emirates emphasised that carrying out the programme internally in Dubai allowed tighter control over timelines, costs and quality while building local technical capability. The airline framed the refurbishment as both a service improvement for passengers and an investment in engineering expertise that supports fleet reliability and long-term competitiveness.
