UAE Families Urged to Choose Flexible Tickets Ahead of Summer Travel Surge

UAE travel agents urge families to choose flexible tickets before the summer travel surge, warning that low-cost fares can incur change or cancellation fees.

Travel agents across the UAE are advising families to prioritise flexible tickets as the peak summer travel season approaches, citing higher demand and frequent itinerary changes. Flexible tickets, agents say, are increasingly being viewed as a practical risk-management tool for group and family bookings. The guidance comes amid warnings that seemingly cheap economy fares can carry steep fees if plans change at short notice.

Travel agents warn families to weigh fare types

Travel agency executives in Dubai and Abu Dhabi told reporters that many travellers focus only on headline prices and overlook fare conditions. They noted that families booking multiple seats face multiplied risks when a single change or cancellation attracts per-passenger penalties. Agents emphasised that the apparent savings on promotional economy fares can be eroded quickly by change fees or non-refundable tickets.

Flexible tickets framed as a family risk-management tool

Sherif Al-Faram, chief executive of Sharif House Tourism & Travel, said flexible tickets are not merely “changeable” fares but a way to manage uncertainty for larger parties. He pointed out that holiday plans often shift because of work commitments, delayed visas, or sudden health issues, making flexibility valuable. According to Al-Faram, flexible fares typically allow changes with reduced fees or waivers, and that can significantly lower the financial impact on families.

Price gap often smaller than potential modification costs

Industry figures in the UAE stressed that differences between restricted economy fares and flexible options vary by carrier, route and season. Salah Mansour, CEO of STS at Dubai Link Group, said in many cases the up-front premium for flexibility is modest compared with the cumulative cost of adjusting several tickets later. He advised consumers to evaluate the total potential cost of a booking — including likely change fees — not just the initial fare.

Airline rules differ on fees and fare difference

Travel experts cautioned that airline policies diverge widely: some flexible fares waive change fees but still require payment of any fare difference for a new flight, while others permit limited free changes or partial refunds. Agents urged travellers to read the fare conditions closely before purchase, noting that “change fee” waivers do not automatically mean there will be no extra cost. They also highlighted that some flexible bundles include multiple free modifications, whereas promotional economy seats are frequently non-refundable.

Extra benefits linked to flexible fare classes

Beyond reduced change penalties, flexible tickets can carry other perks that matter to families, such as seat selection, higher baggage allowances and priority services. Mansour said these benefits can be especially useful on long-haul or high-demand routes where seat adjacency and baggage allowances reduce stress and extra charges. He added that certain flexible fares also earn more loyalty points, which can translate into savings on future travel for frequent family travellers.

Early booking and careful reading of terms recommended

Agency managers advised booking early to secure flexible inventory and contiguous seats for families, because seat availability and fare classes tend to narrow as departure dates approach. Amin Al-Awadi, general manager at Alawadi Travel, said that while early purchases can lock in lower prices and better seat choices, long lead times increase the chance plans change. He urged customers to check three key elements: modification fees, refund conditions and what ancillary services are included.

Final travel planning should account for both known and potential costs, agents emphasised, especially for multi-person bookings where penalties multiply. Families expecting any chance of schedule shifts would often find flexible tickets more economical once the risk of changes is factored in. Travelers are advised to compare total potential expenditure and read fare rules closely before completing summer bookings.
