Two citizen university students succeeded in extracting a natural material from palm fibers that is used as an alternative to “fiberglass” used in the manufacture of boats, heat insulators, parts of cars, and extension pipes.
Student Walid Othman Al-Naqbi told Emirates Al-Youm that the natural fiber project, which he completed in partnership with his colleague Hussein Ahmed Al-Naqbi, took about three months, and depends on making use of palm fibers, which are considered waste that is disposed of by burning, causing environmental pollution. . He explained that they conducted a study on palm fibers, to be used in manufacturing as a safe natural alternative to fiberglass, which is used in many industries, such as boats, by conducting chemical treatments of the fibers and physical treatment, and several experiments were conducted on the material to confirm its effectiveness. Its strength, longevity, and making sure it’s lightweight.
He stated that according to the statistics they obtained, palm fibers in the Emirates are disposed of by burning, which occurs almost daily, which negatively affects the environment, as it reduces the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Al Naqbi added: “We participated in the project in the Science, Technology and Innovation Festival organized by the Ministry of Education, in Dubai, and we won first place at the UAE level in the competition, and we won runner-up place at the UAE level in the Emirati World Competition, and we represented the country in the largest scientific competition at the level of The world participated in the Intel ISEF competition in America last year.
