Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon kill two aid distributors and prompt evacuations

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on May 11, 2026 struck multiple towns including Nabatieh and Zibdine, killing two aid distributors and prompting evacuation orders across several border communities.

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Monday afternoon struck a string of towns near the border and in the western Bekaa, Lebanese authorities said. The strikes, which Lebanese state media attributed to Israeli warplanes and drones, hit residential areas and a vehicle in Zibdine where two men distributing bread were killed. Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported the victims as Yahya Ali Qubeisi and Hussein Ahmad Qubeisi, and said multiple towns were warned to evacuate.

Airstrikes hit multiple towns in southern Lebanon

Lebanese official reporting said airstrikes targeted towns across the south and parts of the western Bekaa on May 11, 2026, with strikes reported in and around Nabatieh and Kafr Dunin. Witnesses described explosions and columns of smoke rising above populated areas as residents fled to safer locations. The Lebanese NNA attributed the attacks to Israeli warplanes and unmanned aerial systems carrying out targeted strikes across the border region.

Drone strike kills two aid distributors in Zibdine

A drone-launched munition struck a vehicle in the town of Zibdine, killing Yahya Ali Qubeisi and Hussein Ahmad Qubeisi as they were reportedly distributing bundles of bread to residents. The NNA’s account said the two men were engaged in humanitarian relief activities at the time they were hit. Local sources and medical responders transported the dead to nearby facilities; Lebanese authorities have not released further forensic details pending official investigations.

Israeli military issues immediate evacuation orders

The Israeli army issued an urgent warning on Monday morning ordering residents of nine towns in southern Lebanon and the town of Qallaya in the western Bekaa to evacuate their homes immediately. The notice instructed civilians to move at least 1,000 metres from their towns into open areas, the NNA reported, citing the Israeli directive. Such evacuation orders have been used in recent weeks in anticipation of or response to kinetic operations near the Israel-Lebanon frontier.

NNA reports strikes on Nabatieh and Kafr Dunin

State media said that, in addition to Zibdine, the city of Nabatieh and the village of Kafr Dunin were struck by Israeli systems, including both manned aircraft and drones. Local officials in Nabatieh described damage to structures and disruptions to essential services, while emergency crews continued clearing debris and assisting displaced families. No independent confirmation from international monitors was immediately available at the time of the reports.

Humanitarian and security implications along the border

Humanitarian workers and local officials warned that the strikes and evacuation orders increased the risk of civilian displacement and compounded existing shortages of food and basic services in south Lebanon. Aid distribution efforts have been strained by the security environment, and the killing of two individuals while distributing bread underscores the dangers faced by volunteers and relief teams. Security analysts said renewed strikes risk escalating tensions along a volatile frontier where intermittent cross-border activity has previously led to wider confrontations.

Regional tensions and diplomatic responses expected

The strikes come amid a period of heightened cross-border tensions between Israel and armed groups in Lebanon, and diplomats in the region were expected to monitor developments closely. Lebanese authorities have lodged protests over recent incursions and strikes in southern areas, while officials in Tel Aviv have framed some operations as defensive measures. International actors and neighbouring states typically call for restraint when civilian casualties and mass displacements occur near the frontier.

The situation remains fluid, with Lebanese state media continuing to report aftershocks from the afternoon strikes and local emergency services working to account for casualties and assist those displaced. Authorities on both sides of the border could issue further statements as investigations proceed and as humanitarian needs are assessed.
