A recent Gulf study prepared by a team of specialists confirmed that the most prominent psychological problems that children suffer from due to the presence of a foreign maid are the tendency towards introversion, isolation, aggressive tendencies, lethargy and laziness.
In detail, a citizen said before the Criminal Court during the consideration of a case of assaulting her maid, that she was surprised when she returned from work early, unlike her usual habit, to find a huge mess inside the house, and she found her three-year-old son in his room naked under the bed, and the room’s air conditioner temperature was very low.
She added that her son had been suffering from asthma for some time, noting that she had discovered that the maid had deliberately caused her son’s illness, and that she was mistreating him in revenge. She attached a medical certificate stating that her son was receiving psychological treatment to rehabilitate him.
Another citizen, called (M.A.), told “Emarat Al Youm” that she brought in a maid of Asian nationality who was over 40 years old, following the advice of one of her relatives to take care of her daughter while she was away at work. However, she was surprised after a few months by a big change in her daughter’s behavior, as she became introverted and spoke little. She also noticed that she had difficulty speaking (stuttering) and cried quickly.
(M.A.) added that after the girl’s condition deteriorated, she was forced to take her to a specialist doctor, who gave her several pieces of advice, including monitoring the maid’s behavior with her during her absence. Indeed, she began monitoring the maid without her knowledge, and discovered that she was abusing and terrorizing the girl and keeping her alone in her room during her absence from work, so she immediately terminated her services.
A social worker at a private school, Suham Baybars, said that the most prominent problem she faced was the attachment of a child in kindergarten to the maid who raised her hysterically, to the point that she was inseparable from her and treated her like her mother. The mother was happy with this situation and bragged about it to her friends, until the maid decided to return to her country due to her own circumstances. The child suffered a psychological setback, which was evident in her academic delay, her withdrawal, and her constant feeling of loneliness.
She pointed out that there are many forms of psychological effects that young children are exposed to as a result of abnormal relationships with their maids, which requires parents to monitor this relationship very carefully, play a fundamental role in their children’s lives, and take into account the cultural and social differences between their children and the maids.
Social consultant Asmaa Abu Al-Ainain said that there are prominent cases covered by the media about maids assaulting or torturing children, but there are many cases that are not covered by the media because they do not include a criminal aspect. Also, many families prefer to deal with the matter without causing a fuss or filing a complaint if there is no physical impact on the child.
She pointed out that one of the most prominent forms of assault on children by servants is child molestation, which is a crime that occurs as a result of family members being absent from home for long periods and leaving their children alone with the servants, whether they are female or male.
She stressed that harassment is the biggest factor that negatively affects the child’s psychological well-being, as its effects remain for long periods in the child’s life, and may remain throughout life. She explained that the intimate relationship between the mother and her children in the presence of the maid helps them overcome cultural and linguistic differences, and limits any negative practices that the maid may do towards the children in the absence of the parents.
For its part, the General Directorate of Nationality and Residency confirmed that the support labor law that was completed and approved by the Federal National Council will avoid all the negatives suffered by the domestic labor sector within the country once it comes into effect, whether in the family’s relationship with the worker or its relationship with the mediation office that brought him from his country.
The administration explained that the law stipulates in many of its new articles that a maid should not be employed unless it is confirmed that she has received the necessary training and qualification, in addition to obligating the domestic service office to submit an official certificate stating that the maid is physically and psychologically fit, which will prevent the recruitment of workers who are not physically and psychologically qualified, as was the case in the past.
