Royal Jordanian activates contingency plans after Damascus and Baghdad FIR closures

Royal Jordanian monitors Syrian and Iraqi airspace after temporary FIR closures

Royal Jordanian says scheduled services continue except to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon; closures affect Damascus FIR (June 7–8, 2026) and Baghdad FIR (June 7–10, 2026).

Royal Jordanian confirms close monitoring of Syrian and Iraqi airspace

Royal Jordanian said on June 7, 2026 that it is closely following developments in the Syrian and Iraqi Flight Information Regions (FIRs).
The airline confirmed that its scheduled services will continue as usual except for flights to and from Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, and that it is implementing the necessary operational measures.

Royal Jordanian identified the affected FIRs and provided precise UTC timings for the temporary closures.
The carrier said it is coordinating with civil aviation authorities and other relevant agencies to adjust affected services and preserve operational safety.

Damascus FIR temporarily closed from June 7 to June 8, 2026

Syrian authorities announced a temporary closure of the Damascus Flight Information Region (Damascus FIR) effective from 19:45 UTC on June 7, 2026 until 08:00 UTC on June 8, 2026.
The notice permits only flights arriving at and departing from Aleppo International Airport to operate via specified air routes during the closure period.

Royal Jordanian said the Damascus FIR closure affects its routing options for services that transit Syrian airspace and has prompted route adjustments where feasible.
The airline emphasized that the exception for Aleppo flights is limited and subject to the specific safety and routing conditions issued by Syrian aviation authorities.

Baghdad FIR closed for operational reasons until June 10, 2026

Iraqi authorities issued a NOTAM closing the Baghdad Flight Information Region (Baghdad FIR) from 19:40 UTC on June 7, 2026 through 19:40 UTC on June 10, 2026 for operational reasons.
The closure removes Iraq’s airspace from available en-route options for international carriers during that period and is expected to affect multiple regional networks.

Royal Jordanian confirmed the Baghdad FIR notice was received on June 7 and said its operations team is treating the closure as a significant constraint on route planning.
The airline is assessing fuel, crew and slot implications for affected flights and is coordinating with air traffic control agencies in neighboring FIRs.

Flights to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon excluded from normal schedules

The carrier stated that scheduled services remain in place for most destinations but that routes to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon are not operating under the current notices.
Passengers booked on affected services have been advised that flight status may change and that alternative arrangements are being considered where possible.

Royal Jordanian urged travellers to check the latest flight status through the airline’s official communication channels and to allow additional time at airports for any operational changes.
The airline said it will inform passengers directly if rebooking, rerouting or refunds are required due to the airspace restrictions.

Contingency plans activated and coordination with authorities

Royal Jordanian reported that it has activated its approved operational contingency plans and is conducting route reviews in coordination with civil aviation authorities.
The airline emphasized that all actions are being taken to maintain the highest standards of safety and operational security for passengers and crew.

Operational teams are re-evaluating long-haul and regional routings, fuel uplift strategies and crew duty patterns to mitigate disruption.
The carrier added that it continues to liaise with aeronautical information services and neighbouring FIRs to identify safe and efficient alternatives.

Practical impact on schedules and passenger guidance

Passengers travelling in the coming days should monitor official notifications and contact the airline directly for updated itineraries and options.
Royal Jordanian recommends that travellers confirm check-in times and verify any transfer arrangements that may be affected by route changes.

Airport authorities and airlines typically publish NOTAM-driven schedule adjustments on short notice, and passengers are advised to maintain flexibility.
The carrier reiterated its commitment to communicating promptly about any further changes as the situation evolves.

Royal Jordanian’s swift activation of contingency procedures and its coordination with aviation authorities aim to limit disruption while prioritizing safety amid temporary closures of the Damascus and Baghdad FIRs.
