Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and the Emsteel Group announced the successful completion of the development of a pilot project for sustainable steel production using green hydrogen.
The pilot project in Abu Dhabi is considered the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, which uses green hydrogen to reduce iron ore, an essential step in the steel production process.
A statement issued yesterday stated that the pilot project has now entered the fully operational stage and has begun successfully producing sustainable steel.
Masdar CEO, Mohammed Jameel Al Ramahi, said: “Decarbonization is one of the sectors whose emissions are difficult to mitigate, and is a vital and important factor that supports the achievement of the historic UAE agreement reached during the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and green hydrogen constitutes a basic pillar that supports efforts.” Local and global to achieve the goals of climate neutrality, we are proud to contribute a pioneering role in this field.”
For his part, CEO of Emsteel Group, Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Rumaithi, said: “We are committed to continuing our role in supporting decarbonization in the steel sector, in line with the UAE’s strategy for climate neutrality by 2050. Our efforts have yielded fruitful results represented by increased reliance on “Clean energy sources will increase to more than 80% in 2023. The group is also the first steel manufacturing company in the world to capture its carbon emissions, making its operations emissions 45% lower than the global average.”
