The President of the Emirati and Arab Federations and Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee of the Dubai International Championship, Major General Ismail Al Gergawi, revealed the absence of the Lebanese sports team, the “defending champion,” from the 34th edition scheduled for the Al-Nasr Club Hall during the period from January 24 to February 2.
Al-Gergawi told Emirates Al-Youm: “The Lebanese athlete’s apology will not affect the technical level of the tournament, despite the great efforts made in attempts to convince the club to be present in the 34th edition.”
He explained: “We have a strong relationship with the Lebanese Basketball Federation and the Lebanese clubs, especially since the athlete’s decision to apologize came in accordance with what the club confirmed due to the lack of technical readiness in addition to the difficulty of bringing in high-level foreign professionals.”
He added: “The Supreme Organizing Committee tried to help the athlete overcome the obstacles of contracting with professionals, but in the end we respect his decision.”
He continued: “The current version records the presence of two teams from the Philippines, each of which has fan bases separate from the other, which promises a new exceptional version.”
