There are no warnings about “Nexium” and its counterparts

The Ministry of Health and Community Protection confirmed its communication with the American and European Medicines Authority, to clarify the truth of the rumors that were recently circulated on social media, about the presence of warnings about the drug “Nexium” to treat stomach reflux and similar treatments.

The Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Policy and Licensing Sector, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Pharmacovigilance in the State, Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, stated that the drug “Nexium” is from a group of drugs that are used to treat stomach ulcers and esophageal reflux.

He said that what is being circulated on social media is a video from the news network CNN in late 2016 about causing an increased risk of kidney failure, is a study conducted at John Hopkin University, and was not taken into consideration by the US Food and Drug Administration. The product leaflet also states that kidney side effects are rare.

He stressed that Nexium medication is not dispensed in the country except with a prescription and under medical supervision, as is the case in Europe and the Gulf states, unlike the United States of America, where it can be obtained without a prescription, pointing out that the state places strict control on the use of the drug and prevents randomness. Taking it, which reduces the possibility of complications. This applies to any type of medication, such as painkillers. The company that manufactured the drug, “AstraZeneca,” sent a report to the ministry, in which it confirmed the safety of the drug “Nexium” from any side effects in the kidneys.
