The Dubai Police General Traffic Department recorded 21,300 shoulder-of-road violations, within six months, since the deployment of the modern devices that it specifically designed to monitor this violation from March until last October.

The director of the department, Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, told Emirates Al-Youm that the new mobile road shoulder radar picks up a number of between 50 and 90 violations every day, and this reflects the insistence of a large number of drivers on wrongly overtaking despite the seriousness of it.

Drivers using Emirates Road said that violations on the shoulder of the road increase during peak hours, and cause great confusion as drivers deliberately drive quickly for long distances on the left shoulder of the road, which represents a great danger if a vehicle is forced to exit onto the shoulder of the road in an emergency.

Al Mazrouei stated that the index for controlling road shoulder violations is very high in the Emirate of Dubai, attributing this to the use of modern technologies to control this violation, after it has been repeatedly committed in an annoying manner by drivers on external streets, especially Emirates Road.

He pointed out that the new radar is flexible and equipped with a high-resolution camera, noting that the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police is keen to diversify control sources in a way that deters violators, and at the same time maintains the security of the road and the safety of its users.

He stressed that overtaking from the shoulder of the road causes many problems, including congestion, especially on external roads, explaining that there are drivers who overtake at high speeds on the narrow space parallel to the yellow line that is not designated for vehicles to travel on, which increases the chances of colliding with vehicles stopped for some reason.

Emirates Today documented on video a large number of overtaking violations on the left shoulder of the road on Emirates Road, committed by people driving at high speeds that are not commensurate with the nature of that designated emergency distance. Al Mazrouei explained that many people actually violate, but most of them do not realize that there is a mobile radar on the shoulder of the road that relies on innovative technology that enables it to distinguish the yellow line, and then detect any car that crosses it, pointing out that the fine applied to this violation is 600 dirhams and six black points. Because of its extreme danger.

Muhammad Ali (driver) said that he is very annoyed by the perpetrators of this violation, because he stands in a long line in the area linking Dubai and Sharjah on Emirates Road, while he sees other cars violating the law and driving very quickly on the shoulder of the road, and suddenly returning to the street as soon as they see a police patrol. This causes confusion, increases crowding, and represents a danger to others.

Yusuf Ali stated that he cooperates with Dubai Police through the “We Are All Police” program, and reports drivers who overtake in this way, because they are no better than their committed peers.

Ali bin Darwish reported that he used to commit this behavior until he was photographed by the road shoulder radar and a ticket worth 600 dirhams and six black points was issued against him. He has complied since then and has not repeated the violation again.
