World Cup Promotions Drive UAE Retail Sales Growth Over 25%

World Cup retail sales in UAE jump more than 25% as tournament promotions drive demand

World Cup retail sales in the UAE rose 25% as themed promotions, prize draws and matchday bundles increased demand for snacks, beverages and electronics.

The World Cup delivered a clear boost to retail activity across the UAE as outlets reported a surge in shoppers and transactions tied to tournament-themed promotions. Retailers and sector specialists said World Cup retail sales climbed by more than a quarter, driven by targeted discounts, prize draws and matchday product bundles. The increase marked a recovery in footfall following a relatively quiet period after the Eid al-Adha season.

Retailers report more than 25% sales surge

Retail executives and store managers said sales during the World Cup period exceeded typical volumes by roughly 20–25% and in some cases topped 25%. The uplift was most visible in hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores that rolled out competitive offers timed to match schedules and marquee fixtures. Retailers credited both price promotions and the excitement of the tournament for turning casual browsers into repeat shoppers.

Promotions and prize mechanics acted as a major traffic driver, according to several industry sources. Stores that combined discounts with prize draws or travel-ticket giveaways reported above-average store visits and longer dwell times. The sales managers noted that the momentum benefited not just high-margin categories but also everyday grocery and beverage lines.

Promotions, prize draws and matchday bundles lift footfall

Merchandising tied to the World Cup—branded displays, match-day bundles and limited edition packs—became common across checkout aisles and endcap islands. Many outlets introduced “match boxes” and curated packs that grouped beverages, snacks and party essentials into single offers for families watching games. These bundles simplified shopping for consumers and encouraged larger basket sizes, retail managers said.

Prize draws and instant-win activations added an extra incentive for customers to choose one retailer over another. Promotional formats ranged from vouchers and electronics to higher-value prizes such as travel tickets and car giveaways. The competitive promotional environment encouraged constant refreshes of offers, keeping consumers engaged throughout the tournament.

Top-selling categories during the tournament

Beverages, both soft drinks and juices, emerged as the leading category, followed closely by nuts, chips and other snack foods that are popular for match-day gatherings. Retailers also reported strong sales in confectionery, biscuits, tea and coffee as households stocked up for extended viewing sessions. Packaged goods specifically marketed for sharing or party consumption performed particularly well.

Electronics and small appliances saw uplift where promotions tied purchases to prize draws or bundled accessories. Some outlets reported spikes in demand for televisions and small audio devices as consumers upgraded viewing setups. This cross-category effect amplified overall World Cup retail sales beyond food and drink items.

Retailers’ strategies and competitive responses

Sharjah Cooperative’s marketing head, Faisal Khalid Al Nabooda, said the cooperative launched a campaign called “Tournament Atmosphere” to synchronise offers with match schedules and shopper needs. He noted that specially designed packs and promotional draws helped attract customers seeking convenience and value during games. The cooperative’s approach focused on a mix of price reductions and experiential promotions to meet heightened demand.

Retail sales managers reported a direct correlation between promotional intensity and sales gains. Rikesh Kotin, a sales manager at a UAE retail outlet, said stores that introduced frequent, visible promotions and prize giveaways recorded the strongest increases in footfall. Procurement managers, including Dilip Vishal, added that many retailers created dedicated assortments with the most-consumed items for match-day consumption, enhancing both convenience and sales velocity.

Outlook: momentum expected to persist through tournament

Industry sources expect the elevated retail activity to continue through the remaining fixtures as retailers sustain promotional calendars and refresh prize incentives. Forecasts from procurement teams suggested that demand would remain above seasonal norms while the tournament remains on the calendar. Continued competition between outlets is likely to keep offers attractive for consumers and maintain higher basket values.

Retailers face the challenge of balancing promotional spend with margins, but most said the current environment justifies the investments given the volume gains. As promotions wind down after the final whistle, analysts expect a gradual normalization of sales patterns, though some uplift may linger for celebratory purchases and clearance activity.

The World Cup period provided a timely stimulus for the UAE retail market, demonstrating how large sporting events can catalyse consumer spending through well-timed promotions and engaging prize mechanics. The impacts were evident in both urban emirates and suburban neighbourhoods, where shoppers responded positively to matchday assortments and experiential offers.
