Worst 50 Egyptian Films in 10 Years

Under the title “The 50 Worst Egyptian Films in 10 Years,” the monthly magazine “Good News Cinema” has given the title of worst to a large number of Egyptian films, stars, and filmmakers, as part of a large file that is considered the most prominent in the new issue of the magazine, which will be released in a few days. The supervisor of the press file, Mohamed Abdel Aziz, said, “They chose the screening date of the film “Saidi at the American University” starring Mohamed Henedy, Ahmed El Sakka, Mona Zaki, Ghada Adel, and Hany Ramzy, directed by Saeed Hamed, as the beginning of a new phase in Egyptian cinema, the effects of which are still ongoing to this day.”

According to its supervisor, the file monitored all films shown since the summer of 1998. The magazine’s staff of 20 editors gave each film they watched a score out of 10, and the 50 films with the lowest scores were selected to be included in the worst list, which was full of surprises. The first place in terms of artistic badness was “The 16th Criminal Group” starring singers Essam Karaka and Rico, directed by Hamed Saeed, which was shown two years ago and which the list described as “a film that is not worth watching at all.” The films were ranked from second to tenth place starting with “The Clown” starring Haitham Ahmed Zaki and Fathy Abdel Wahab, directed by Emad El-Bahat, “Moments of Femininity” starring Jumana Murad and Ibrahim Youssef, directed by Moanes El-Shorbagy, “The Story of the Popular Neighborhood” starring Talat Zakaria and Nicole Saba, directed by Ashraf Fayek, and “Qishta Yaba” starring Yasmine El-Naggar and singer Mustafa Kamel, directed by Atef Shukry.

The sixth place went to the movie “I Love You and I Die for You” by singer Fares, Ahmed Haroun and Amira Fathy, directed by Sayed Eissawy, followed by “If This Was a Dream” by Maged El Kedwany and Tarek Lotfy, directed by Tarek El Nahry, “Badr” by Kung Fu player Youssef Mansour, written and directed by him, in eighth place, “Sheber W Nos” by Hassan Hosny, directed by Adel Yehia, and ninth place went to “Ali Spicy” by singer Hakim and Samia El Khashab, directed by Mohamed El Naggar, in tenth place.

Films starring big stars were included in the list of the 50 worst, including “Whale Hunting” by Elham Shaheen, Farouk El-Fishawy and director Ali Abdel Khaleq, “Lovers’ Stories” by Nabila Obeid, Hussein Fahmy and director Saeed Marzouk, “The Mongoose” by Mahmoud Abdel Aziz and directed by Ali Abdel Khaleq, and “Katkout” by Mohamed Saad and directed by Ahmed Awad.

Among the films starring young stars are “The Searchers for Freedom” starring Ahmed Ezz and Dalia El-Behery, directed by Enas El-Degheidy, “Omar and Salma” starring Tamer Hosny and Mai Ezz El-Din, directed by Akram Farid, and “Code 36” starring Mustafa Shaaban and Maya Nasri, directed by Ahmed Samir Farag.

While the magazine that runs the ranking is funded by Good News, which also owns a production company, the worst list included a film produced by the company, “Marjan Ahmed Marjan,” starring Adel Emam and directed by Ali Idris, which came in 25th place on the worst list. Ironically, veteran director Ali Abdel Khaleq was named “Worst Director” because five of his films were on the list, which also included directors Ahmed El Badry and Emad El Bahat. Actress Mai Ezz El Din was named “Worst Actress,” because four of her films made the list, followed by Samia El Khashab and Dalia El Behery. Actor Tamer Hagras was named “Worst Actor,” followed by Mustafa Qamar and Mohamed Attia. “Worst Writer” went to Ahmed El Bey, followed by writers Ahmed Abdullah and Essam El Shamaa.

The list’s compilers said that 16 films were excluded from the classification, as they were only watched and evaluated by three or fewer editors, so it was unfair for them to be included in the list, even though they are considered “bad” films and deserve to be included in the list. The evaluation resulted in a list of the 10 best films in recent years, which included, in order, “Araq Al-Balah” by Radwan Al-Kashef, “Khali Min Al-Cholesterol” by Mohamed Abu Seif, “Al-Madina” by Yousry Nasrallah, “Ahla Al-Awkat” by Hala Khalil, “Al-Abwab Al-Maghlaqa” by Atef Hetata, “Jannat Al-Shayateen” and “Behb Al-Sima” by Osama Fawzy, “Citizen, Spy, and Thief” by Daoud Abdel Sayed, “Bab Al-Shams” by Yousry Nasrallah, and “Ard Al-Khawf” by Daoud Abdel Sayed.

20 editors and film critics participated in giving the films success and failure ratings, and films by big stars were included in the list of the 50 worst, including “Whale Hunting” by Elham Shaheen and Farouk El-Fishawy, directed by Ali Abdel Khaleq, “Lovers’ Stories” by Nabila Obeid, Hussein Fahmy, and director Saeed Marzouk, “The Mongoose” by Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, directed by Ali Abdel Khaleq, and “Katkout” by Mohamed Saad, directed by Ahmed Awad.
