Aomori City is set to join an elite group of Godolphin young horses in the Group 1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes when the two-year-old colt bids for the 1,400m turf title at Ireland’s famous The Curragh today.

The world-class Godolphin team has previously left its mark on the Irish race, which dates back to 1849, with victories including the legendary stallion Dubawi in 2004, Don Approach in 2012, and the two-year-old champion Pinatubo in 2019, who later won the classic races. They were preceded by the colt Quattro in 2018, and most recently with Native Trail in 2021.

Aomori City, trained by Charlie Appleby, made his racing debut in June with a comfortable win at Nottingham, England, before finishing third in the Group 2 Bri Morny at the July Festival at Newmarket last July, and followed that up in the same month with a win in the Group 2 World Pool Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, England.

“Aomori City heads into the Irish race with a fantastic record and has earned his chance to compete at this level after winning the Vintage Stakes, showing a marked improvement in form as the distance increased to seven furlongs (1400m),” Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby said of Aomori City’s recent preparations.

• The Irish race dates back to 1849.
