A citizen infant died during a circumcision operation in Khor Fakkan

The Ministry of Health and Community Protection formed a specialized medical committee to investigate the death of a citizen infant as a result of a circumcision operation at a government hospital in Khor Fakkan, after the infant’s father filed a report accusing the doctor who performed the operation of causing the death of his first child, and the Public Prosecution is waiting for the coroner’s report on the cause of the infant’s death.

In detail, the incident began when the citizen Hamid Ali Saeed (23 years old) and his wife sat outside the operating room waiting for the circumcision of their one-month-old baby, “Ali,” to be completed. Unusually, their wait was long and anxiety and confusion began to creep into them, especially since the circumcision process. It usually only takes a few minutes, and their confusion increased because children underwent circumcision and came out, and their infant stayed in the operating room for about two hours.

For its part, the Ministry of Health and Community Protection confirmed to Emirates Al-Youm that a specialized medical committee has been formed by the Ministry to determine the causes of the infant’s death, noting that its information is not clear about the incident yet.

She explained that she is waiting for the procedures to be completed to confirm the facts about the causes of death.

The citizen, Hamid Saeed, (from the city of Al-Bidiya in the Emirate of Fujairah), said that he had his first child (Ali) a month ago, and he was glad of his arrival, especially since it brought joy and happiness to the family’s life, pointing out that the infant was in good health and did not suffer from any health problems. This made him think about undergoing circumcision, and a week ago he took his wife and infant and went to a government hospital in Khor Fakkan in order to undergo circumcision.

He added that the specialist doctor informed him that the circumcision procedure was simple, explained to him how to perform it, then examined the infant and made sure that he did not suffer from any diseases, and reassured him that the procedure had no complications and had almost no side effects.

The father continued: “When (Ali) entered the operating room, I sat with my wife waiting for the circumcision operation, and the minutes passed slowly and boringly, and they were the most difficult minutes I have ever lived in my life, and I kept following everyone who entered or left the operating room,” pointing out that “things seemed to be… “It was normal at first, but after a while I felt a state of turmoil inside the operating room. At that moment, my patience began to run out, especially since some families came, performed the circumcision, and left, while my infant stayed in the operating room for about two hours.”

The father added that he could not bear the long wait, and began asking everyone he saw coming out of the operating room, “Where is my son (Ali)?”, and did not receive a satisfactory answer. He tried to enter the operating room and saw the nurses in a state of alert and confusion, indicating that after two hours of deadly waiting His son was taken out of the operating room covered with several heavy blankets, and he noticed that he was pale in color and breathing with great difficulty.

He continued that he rushed to the doctor who performed the operation and asked him about his son’s health condition, and he assured him that “he is still under the influence of the anesthetic and needs some time until he regains consciousness after the anesthetic effect wears off,” pointing out that “when he was transferred to the children’s department, he was placed in the care room.” However, the pediatrician began a verbal argument with the surgeon who performed the operation, and in the meantime, Ali’s pulse began to decrease and he suffered from shortness of breath, which caused the doctors to perform a resuscitation operation on him.”

The father said: “I had a mysterious feeling as I watched the infant coming out of blood from his mouth, nose, and several places. The bleeding did not stop until he died 10 minutes later. With his death, I lost the joy of my first son, and to this day I suffer from the psychological shock and its harsh impact on me and my wife.”

The father continued: “It did not occur to me or to his mother that we would lose our son so quickly and for the sake of circumcision, and we did not expect our joys to turn into tears and sorrow over the loss of our first child, and from this moment we live in a state of shock and denial of the painful reality.”

He confirmed that he had opened a report about the incident in the Khor Fakkan Prosecution to find out who caused his son’s death and punish him, explaining that the forensic doctor’s result would determine the real causes behind the death, and that he would continue to follow up on the measures taken by the Ministry of Health and Community Protection.

For its part, the Public Prosecution in Khor Fakkan stated that it will initiate investigations as soon as the result of the forensic doctor is issued, who will determine the true causes of death and indicate whether there was a medical error that resulted in the death of the infant.
