Abu Dhabi Ports signs partnership with Borouge to launch Fujairah export hub

Abu Dhabi Ports and Borouge partnership to explore Fujairah export gateway

Abu Dhabi Ports and Borouge partnership will explore an export gateway in Fujairah to boost export resilience, logistics capacity and flexible shipping routes.

Abu Dhabi Ports announced a partnership agreement with Borouge PLC to assess opportunities for an alternative international export gateway on the UAE’s eastern coast. The move is designed to strengthen export continuity and operational resilience by leveraging Abu Dhabi Ports’ maritime network and integrated port services in Fujairah. The agreement signals a strategic step toward diversifying shipping routes and enhancing the logistics backbone for vital industrial exports.

Agreement to explore an eastern UAE export gateway

Abu Dhabi Ports and Borouge will study the feasibility of establishing a dedicated export gateway on the UAE’s east coast, with Fujairah identified as the primary location under consideration. The partnership aims to create an alternative node in Borouge’s long-term export strategy, improving redundancy and reducing operational risk for the company’s global shipments.

The initiative will examine the technical, commercial and regulatory requirements for linking Borouge’s export flows to a new Fujairah-based corridor. Stakeholders will assess cargo volumes, terminal capacity and the potential for specialized handling facilities to support petrochemical shipments.

Fujairah terminals and polyolefins infrastructure under review

Central to the collaboration is the use of Abu Dhabi Ports’ integrated services at its Fujairah facilities, which sit on the UAE’s eastern shoreline and offer deep-water access. The partners will evaluate the development of dedicated polyolefins infrastructure to support Borouge’s product portfolio and streamline export handling.

Planned studies will consider storage, loading facilities and downstream logistics to ensure safe and efficient movement of polymer products. The review will also account for environmental safeguards and compliance with international handling standards for petrochemical cargoes.

Reducing dependence on congested sea lanes

A key objective of the partnership is to reduce reliance on traditionally congested shipping routes by activating new maritime corridors through Fujairah. By diversifying port options, the collaboration seeks to improve scheduling flexibility and decrease exposure to regional bottlenecks that can disrupt export timetables.

The partners intend to work with shipping lines to establish alternative sailings and optimize vessel routing, which could lead to more reliable lead times for customers. This approach aims to protect supply chains from single-point failures and provide contingency options during peak seasonal or geopolitical pressures.

Operational integration with Abu Dhabi Ports’ maritime network

The agreement emphasizes leveraging Abu Dhabi Ports’ extensive maritime connectivity and terminal management capabilities to integrate Borouge’s logistics needs. Operational planning will focus on aligning berth availability, pilotage, cargo handling and hinterland transport links to support higher throughput and seamless transshipment.

Operational teams from both sides will coordinate to pilot trial shipments and model throughput scenarios, allowing a phased approach to capacity build-up. The partnership will also explore digital integration for cargo tracking and scheduling to improve predictability for exporters and carriers.

Executive statements and strategic alignment

Saif Al Mazrouei, Chief Executive of the Ports sector at Abu Dhabi Ports, described the partnership as an opportunity to apply the group’s integrated port and logistics strengths to support critical industrial exports. He emphasized that the collaboration aligns with national priorities to enhance trade connectivity and sustain the UAE’s role as a competitive logistics hub.

Hazim Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive of Borouge PLC, said the alliance represents a strategic step toward strengthening Borouge’s logistics resilience and global supplier reliability. He noted that a more diversified export network would underpin the company’s continuing growth while contributing to the UAE’s industrial strategy.

Historical partnership and implications for UAE logistics

The proposed arrangement builds on a long-standing relationship between Abu Dhabi Ports and Borouge that dates back to 2001, with Borouge historically among the largest exporters using Abu Dhabi Ports’ facilities. The renewed focus on Fujairah reflects broader national efforts to expand logistical options and enhance the resilience of supply chains servicing the export-oriented industrial sector.

If realized, the Fujairah gateway could become a central node in a multiplexed export network that reduces pressure on single ports and improves regional trade fluidity. The initiative may also attract ancillary investment in storage, trucking and value-added services in the eastern emirates.

The partners will now proceed with technical and commercial studies to determine the scope, timelines and investment requirements for the proposed gateway, while engaging shipping lines and regulatory bodies to align operational frameworks and safety protocols.
