Is it permissible for the lessor to impose additional fees when renewing the contract?

Lawyer Shouq Al Kathiri said that the laws regulating the UAE were devoid of any text requiring or permitting the landlord to impose an additional fee for renewing the contract, with the exception of the government fees imposed for the process of ratifying and documenting the lease contract.

Al Kathiri explained that after reviewing Law No. (20/2006) regarding renting places and regulating the rental relationship between landlords and tenants in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and Law No. (26/2007) regarding regulating the relationship between landlords and tenants of real estate in the Emirate of Dubai, and Law No. (2/ 2007), regarding regulating the relationship between landlords and tenants in the Emirate of Sharjah, and Law No. (2/2017) issuing the Real Estate Rental Law in the Emirate Ajman, and Law No. (3/2008), regarding regulating the relationship between landlords and tenants of real estate in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, and Law No. (1/2011) regarding renting places in the Emirate of Fujairah, and its amendments, and the executive regulations and decisions issued in their regard. It is clear that some of these laws imposed Ratification and documentation, and then payment of the prescribed fees to the landlord and not the tenant, but at the same time these laws permitted agreement on otherwise.
