The United Arab Emirates achieved advanced results in the TIMSS 2023 study, as the UAE ranked first in the Arab world in the study that measures the progress of students in the fourth and eighth grades in science and mathematics. In the study, in the presence of leaders of educational authorities in the UAE, including the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, the Department of Education and Knowledge in Abu Dhabi, and the Sharjah Private Education Authority, in addition to a number of delegations from Boston University. The Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, which is considered a major partner in the forum, and delegations from the Arab Gulf countries and a number of public and private school principals and district directors.
The Minister of Education, Sarah Al Amiri, congratulated the UAE students on the distinguished results they achieved in the TIMSS study, stressing that these results reflect the great efforts made by the Ministry to improve the country’s performance in various relevant international and standard studies, noting at the same time the great importance of these studies, which It receives great global attention, as it is a major tool for monitoring the development of educational systems around the world, and identifying the strategic directions necessary to advance development.
The Minister explained that the results showed remarkable progress that exceeded the global average, whether in public or private schools, which numbered 750 schools participating in this study, stressing that the UAE is among only three countries that have achieved remarkable progress in the results of the science subject among all participating countries. This reflects a tangible development in the quality of education and the level of students’ academic achievement, within the framework of the Ministry’s vision to achieve global educational leadership.
Al Amiri stated that the Ministry of Education worked in cooperation with all relevant teams to enhance students’ skills in the fields of science and mathematics and improve their competitiveness at the global level, in line with the plans and goals of the UAE related to the education sector, pointing out that the results of the education sector will improve in various international indicators related to the same. Relevance is considered one of the main guidelines in the ministry’s strategy and priorities during the coming stages.
The performance of UAE students in the 2023 session recorded a qualitative leap, compared to the results of the TIMSS study for the year 2019, as the performance of fourth-grade students in mathematics increased by 17 points, and in science by 22 points. In the eighth grade, performance witnessed a noticeable improvement, with an increase of 15 points in mathematics and 14 points in science.
The forum, which was held over two days on December 4 and 5, included a discussion of the results for the Gulf countries, and the initiatives taken by each country to raise the level of students in mathematics and science, in addition to announcing the results of the rest of the world.
